COLUMBIA, Mo. - Despite 24 shots from the Tigers, the Mizzou soccer team played to a scoreless 0-0 double overtime tie against Northwestern Friday night at Walton Stadium. The match was delayed for an hour due to severe weather but it cleared enough to resume play just after 9 p.m.
The tie put Missouri's record at 2-1-2 on the year, while Northwestern went to 3-1-1.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper McKenzie Sauerwein posted her second shutout of the season to up her career total to 17, tying her with Tasha Dittamore for Mizzou's program record. Sauerwein now owns or is tied for Missouri's career wins, shutouts, saves, games played in goal, games started in goal and minutes played in goal marks.
The Tigers opened the match with strong offensive pressure, unleashing three shots in the opening seven minutes. The Northwestern defense turned away attempts from senior Kaysie Clark and sophomore Erin Webb to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard.
In the 18th minute, Webb played a ball into the box intended for junior Taylor Grant. The ball rolled past Grant and right at Northwestern's goalie. The keeper misplayed the ball, allowing it to roll toward the goal line but she grabbed the loose ball right before it rolled into the net.
Play resumed in the 63rd minute following the hour weather delay. The Wildcats almost struck five minutes later but Michelle Manning's shot clanged off the crossbar and out of play.
With just over a minute left in regulation, sophomore Lauren Selaiden received the ball and raced toward goal. She took one touch too many, allowing the Northwestern keeper to come off her line and save Selaiden's attempt. The Tigers outshot the Wildcats 8-0 in both overtime sessions but could not manage to score a game-winner. In the 108th minute, Clark blasted a shot toward goal that hit a Northwestern defender square in the stomach. The rebound found the foot of freshman Savannah Trujillo, but her seven-yard shot missed the upper left corner of the goal by inches.
Mizzou had a 24-6 shots advantage in the match and had nine corners to Northwestern's three.
Missouri returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 7 against UT Martin at 1 p.m. at Walton Stadium.
