COLUMBIA, Mo. - University of Missouri Head Gymnastics Coach Shannon Welker announced on Wednesday the addition of former Iowa Hawkeye Jordyn Doherty to the Mizzou gymnastics program. Doherty, who hails from Kansas City, Mo., will be eligible to compete as a sophomore for the Tigers this season.
"We are excited to have Jordyn join our Mizzou family," Welker said. "She brings a work ethic and passion for gymnastics that will allow her to have an immediate positive impact on our team's performance."
As a freshman for the Hawkeyes in 2014, Doherty competed in 12 meets on vault or bars. She earned a bid to the NCAA Minneapolis Regional on vault, where she scored a 9.825 at the meet to finish 16th on the event among 42 gymnastics.
Doherty competed 12 times on vault and 11 times on bars over the course of the 2014 campaign and notched season highs of 9.875 on vault and 9.750 on bars. She tallied at least a 9.800 on vault seven times during the season, while her 9.875 on the event against Boise State was Iowa's individual best for the year.
"I chose the University of Missouri is because when I was about 10 years old I had the opportunity to attend one of the gymnastics camps and as soon as I got on campus, I knew this was the school I wanted to go to," Doherty said. "I attended many more camps after my first one and I fell for the school every time. The atmosphere the people and the beauty of the school had me hooked. I couldn't be more thankful to finally live out my gymnastics career at the school I have always dreamed of attending."
Before college, Doherty was a Junior Olympic National qualifier in 2013 and claimed the 2013 Missouri State and Region IV bars titles. Doherty also won the bars crown at the 2012 Missouri State Championships to go along with a third-place finish in the all-around. Additionally, she took 11th in the all-around at the 2012 Region IV Championships.
