Mizzou Golf Trio Earns Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Honors

July 23, 2014

Columbia, Mo. - Mizzou Golf had three student-athletes named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars on Wednesday. Seniors Emilio Cuartero (Lleida, Spain) and Hunter Kraus (Memphis, Tenn.) and junior Ryan Zech (Kearney, Mo.) earned the honor, which was announced today by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

To be eligible for the All-America Scholar honors an individual must be a junior or senior in academic standing, complete a minimum of three full years at the collegiate level and participate in 50 percent of the team's competitive rounds for that season. The student-athlete must also have a scoring average of 76.0 (or better) and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2.

It's the second consecutive year Cuartero and Kraus have earned the honor from Cleveland Golf/Srixon. Cuartero was also an All-American for the Tigers on the course last season, leading Mizzou to a program-best third-place finish at the NCAA Columbia Regional and a 15th-place showing at the NCAA Finals in Hutchinson, Kan. On the year Cuartero led Mizzou and ranked among the SEC's best with a 70.72 scoring average. He won two events as a senior, the Columbia Regional Preview (Sept. 16-17) in the fall at The Club at Old Hawthorne and the NCAA Regional. He finished his career with five victories, second all-time in program history.

Kraus was also a regular for the Tigers and finished second at the NCAA Columbia Regional. He posted a season scoring average of 73.77 and had three Top 25 finishes, including an 18th-place finish at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.

Like Cuartero, Zech earned All-America honors on the course as well and was one of the country's best golfers towards the end of his junior season. The Kearney, Mo., native finished with three consecutive Top 20 efforts in postseason play. He opened that impressive run with a tie for 19th at the SEC Championship and then finished 14th at the NCAA Columbia Regional. His tie for ninth at the NCAA Finals was the best individual finish by a Tiger since 1963 when Rice Poe finished fifth.
