Summer Spotlight: Chris Abernathy

July 1, 2014

This summer we are excited to spotlight some of the folks who contribute to our program off the court. Each Tuesday this summer you will get to meet a special individual who makes a big difference to the Mizzou Women's Basketball Program!

WHAT ARE YOUR WOMEN'S BASKETBALL GAMEDAY RESPONSIBILITIES?

My responsibilities are very easy.  I read any of the pre-game sponsor announcements, and then meet with the visiting team's Media Relations contact to make sure I'm clear on the visiting team's name pronunciations.  From there, it's just a matter of watching the game carefully and getting things right as the game goes on.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WORKING WITH MIZZOU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL?

I thoroughly enjoy seeing many of the same people that I first met when I started doing PA for Mizzou women's basketball in the 2005-2006 season.  Everyone's extremely friendly and committed to ensuring that things go smoothly.   Having worked in a similar capacity as a PA announcer for smaller D-I schools, I've always been thoroughly impressed by the professionalism and efficiency of the game operations at Mizzou.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MIZZOU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL MEMORY?

There've been a lot of exciting games for me over the years, but the top has to be the Mizzou-Tennessee game from 2013.  The energy of a big crowd was outstanding, and the Mizzou win was great.  I kept thinking that Tennessee was going to make a run late, but at about the 2nd-half “Under 4:00” time out, I began to think “This is really going to happen.”

WHEN YOU'RE NOT SUPPORTING MIZZOU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL, HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR FREE TIME?

My daughter plays competitive soccer, so either my wife or I take her to tournaments in the spring and fall.  My son starts high school this fall, so we'll also be following him to various marching band events.   We also like to go on a good, long vacation every summer.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT SEASON?

I always look forward to the new faces and seeing the new make-up of each season's players; it's also fun to see how the team starts to gel after early season games with the transition into conference play.
