COLUMBIA, Mo. - Truman the Tiger, the beloved mascot of the University of Missouri, took home top honors at the 2014 National Cheerleaders Association and National Dance Alliance Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla. The win by Truman marked the second national championship for Mizzou cheerleading.
"Everyone is ecstatic with this tremendous honor for Truman," said Mizzou cheerleading coach Suzy Thompson. "He did an outstanding job at this year's competition and is widely deserving of this award. Everyone inside Mizzou cheerleading, Mizzou Athletics and the University of Missouri are thrilled for Truman's great performance!"
Six University of Missouri students made up the collection of Truman the Tigers this past school year. Truman and Mizzou cheerleading began working on the winning minute and a half performance last fall.
Truman's energetic and memorable performance at Daytona Beach ultimately won over the judges in attendance. Fans can watch Truman's entire national championship winning routine here.
Mizzou was among 12 schools in the running for the 2014 mascot national championship. Truman the Tiger beat out his fellow mascot competitors from Oklahoma City University, Maryland, North Carolina State, Iowa State, Western Kentucky, University of North Texas, University of Texas El Paso, Syracuse, Georgia Southern, and James Madison.
