Duluth, Ga.--Senior Bri Kulas and sophomore Lianna Doty have been recognized by Southeastern Conference as released today (March 4) by the league office. Doty was named SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Kulas was named to the All-SEC First Team. This is the third conference honor in Doty's career and the second for Kulas.
Kulas is certainly having an All-Conference season as she leads the team and sits second in the SEC for her 18.6 points per game this season. Most recently, Kulas scored her 1,000th career point, and she sits just 21 points away from reaching 1,000 in her career at Mizzou. Kulas is shooting 44-percent from the field and 41-percent from distance this season. She averages 6.6 rebounds per game, and her 83.4-percent free throw shooting ranks second in the league. She is one of just 11 players in the league to have put up 30 or more points in a game this season. Last season, Kulas was named to the All-SEC Second Team.
The SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor marks Doty's third-career conference honor this season as she was named to the SEC All-Freshman team last season and earned a spot on the SEC Community Service Team earlier this year. A Mechanical Engineering major at Mizzou, Doty maintains an almost perfect grade point average, while also serving as a major player on the court for the Tigers. Doty is averaging five points and almost four rebounds per game, while leading the Tigers with 167 assists on the season. She ranks fourth in the league for her 5.8 assists per game.
First-team and second-team All-SEC honorees, All-Freshman team, All-Defensive team, along with Player, Coach and Freshman, Defensive Player, 6th Woman and Scholar-Athlete of the Year were chosen by the league's 14 coaches. Ties were not broken.
Missouri will continue the season on Wednesday at the 2014 SEC Tournament in Duluth, Ga. The Tigers earned a No. 12 seed and will play Mississippi State (11) at 5 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on FOX Sports SportSouth.
