COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou men's swimming and diving team claimed five event wins, notched 13 NCAA `B' cuts and set a new school record on day two action at the 2013 Mizzou Invite. With just one day remaining, the Tigers sit in first-place with 854 points.
All but one of Mizzou's individual `B' times came in prelims, while the squad also notched a cut in the 200 medley relay during finals.
The Tigers got event victories in from junior Mack Darragh (400 IM in a new school record), junior Eegan Groome (200 free), junior Igor Kozlovskij (100 breast) and senior David Bonuchi (3-meter springboard).
Bonuchi came from behind to claim the 3-meter title with 392.85 points. The senior sat in second after four rounds but posted scores of 73.5 and 81.6 in the final two rounds to win the event by 16 points.
Finals opened with the 200 medley relay, where the Tigers A team of senior Logan Mosley, Kozlovskij, Darragh and freshman Michael Chadwick recorded the fastest time in the nation with a 1:26.12. The time was a `B' cut and just 0.04 off an `A' time, while also standing as the third fastest time in program history. Mizzou's B squad of sophomore Max Grodecki, senior Mark Conroy, freshman Andrew Sansoucie and junior Alex Glogoza took second in 1:27.84.
Darragh claimed the 400 IM title with a record-breaking 3:45.78. His swim was the fastest in the nation and broke his own school record of 3:46.59, which he set at last year's NCAA Championships. Sophomore Daniel Graviss lowered his own personal best by a second and a half to take second in 3:47.14. With his time, Graviss now stands second all-time at Mizzou in the event. Both Darragh and Graviss notched NCAA `B' times.
In the 200 free, Groome just missed his second school record of the meet. He swam a 1:35.98 to win the event and was just 0.17 off his own Mizzou record. Chadwick clocked a time of 1:36.59, faster than his prelims time of 1:36.96, to finish in second. Junior Andrew Phillips was third in a personal best 1:37.22. Those three Tigers, as well as Glogoza and junior Stephen Sobczak all recorded NCAA `B' cuts during the day.
Kozlovskij took home the 100 breast title with a season best swim of 53.64, followed closely behind by Tierney with a 53.88. Earlier in the day, Kozlovskij, Conroy and freshman Eddie Mapel all notched NCAA `B' times, joining Tierney who posted his NCAA cut earlier in the season.
Mizzou went two-three-four-five in the 100 back finals, led by Mosley's 46.80 to take second. In the morning prelims, Mosley swam a 46.60 to tie his own school record that he set last night as part of the 400 medley relay. Grodecki lowered his personal best time in the event to 47.57, an NCAA `B' time and good enough to rank him fourth all-time at Missouri. Junior Austin Fish was fourth (48.47) and freshman Carter Griffin placed fifth (48.66). With Grodecki's NCAA cut, four Tigers now hold NCAA `B' times.
In the final event of the night, the 800 free relay, Missouri's A team of Groome, Chadwick, Glogoza and Phillips took second with a 6:29.34. The time was good enough to rank third all-time in program history.
The Mizzou Invite concludes on Saturday, Nov. 23 with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
