COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou women's swimming and diving team started the 2013 Mizzou Invite with a bang as the Tigers posted one NCAA 'A' cut, five 'B' times and set one new school record during day one preliminaries.
The star of the day was junior Danielle Barbiea, who notched a time of 51.13 in the 100 fly prelims. The time was an NCAA `A' cut, broke the school record, and stands as the fastest time in the nation this year. The time easily broke Shara Stafford's Mizzou record of 52.44 and was over 1.3 seconds faster than Barbiea's previous career best (52.54).
Sophomore Anna Patterson also clocked a personal best with an NCAA `B' time of 53.29 in prelims. Senior Lexi Spivak's morning swim of 54.75 was a career best and put her tied for eighth all-time at Mizzou.
Barbiea and Patterson added more NCAA cuts in the 50 free with personal best times. Barbiea placed first in prelims with a time of 22.42 to move her up to second all-time at Mizzou in the event. Patterson went 22.56 for her second `B' cut of the day. Additionally, junior Emily Doucette took sixth in prelims with a season best time of 23.25.
In the 200 IM, the Tigers had three swimmers place among the top seven in prelims and two notch NCAA `B' times. Freshman Ellie Suek was second with a swim of 2:00.74, just ahead of sophomore Madison Bridges' 2:00.78, both B cuts. Freshman Katharine Ross clocked a 2:02.36 to take seventh in the morning session.
Freshman Brittany Hammond placed 10th in the 500 free with a time of 4:54.18, which was good enough to rank her ninth at Mizzou in the event.
In the diving well, sophomore Lauren Reedy placed second in the 3-meter prelims with a score of 303.00 to advance to finals.
The Mizzou Invite continues with day one finals on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 6 p.m.
