Sept. 12, 2013
Columbia, Mo. -
Mizzou Golf will play in its first of two home tournaments this season on Sept. 16-17 when it hosts the Columbia Regional Preview. The team, coming off a 27-stroke victory at the Tuning Stone Intercollegiate in Verona, N.Y., will be looking to repeat its success during Monday and Tuesday's competition.
The preview will be played at The Club at Old Hawthorne. The par 72 course was opened in 2007 and will be home to Missouri's new team clubhouse and indoor practice facility in a few short weeks. Construction is near completion on a 5,000 sq. ft. golf facility that includes locker rooms, offices, state of the art video equipment, a private driving range and both indoor and outdoor hitting bays.
The 11-team tournament field includes Austin Peay, Iowa State, Kansas State, Louisiana, Memphis, Mississippi, Nebraska, San Francisco, South Alabama and Tulsa. The tournament will consist of 54 holes, with 36 played on Monday and the final 18 played on Tuesday.
The Tigers' tournament lineup will consist of Ryan Zech, Emilio Cuartero, Wilson Sundvold, Euan Walker and Hunter Kraus.
Zech opened the season in an impressive way in New York. The junior finished second individually at the Turning Stone tournament and shot 8-under-par. Although it is still early in the season, Zech leads the team in stroke average with an average round score of 69.33.
Cuartero also had a strong showing at the Tigers' first event. The senior from Spain shot two rounds under 70 on the par 72 course and finished 7-under-par. Cuartero finished third at the Turning Stone tournament and is expected to be a driving force behind the Tigers' 2013-14 campaign.
Sundvold will be competing in his second tournament since redshirting during 2012-2013. He tied for seventh at the Turning Stone event after shooting 3-under-par.
During the Columbia Regional Preview, Walker will make his home debut with the Tigers. The freshman and native of Scotland had an impressive first outing with the team. Walker tied for ninth and shot 2-under-par throughout the tournament.
Kraus will be looking to rebound from his season-opening appearance. He finished the tournament tied for 42nd and was 12-over-par, but was outstanding as a junior and should get back on track early next week.
Mizzou Golf will also be entering individuals into the competition and that qualifying will be finished later this week.
Play is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. C.T. Monday. For tournament scores and updates, follow Mizzou Men's Golf at mutigers.com and @MizzouGolf. Live scoring will also be available via GolfStat.com.
