July 14th marked the first ever invitation from a professional tennis team to spotlight Mizzou Tennis. The KC Explorers honored the tigers at their match in Kansas City, Mo.
“The Explorers Night was a special evening at World Team Tennis because they designated the July 14 match as 'Mizzou Night'”, said Schmid. “The athletes, staff, and fans were so welcoming and there was so much excitement about Mizzou Tennis!”

Head Coach Sasha Schmid and Assistant Coach Jason Potthoff attended the event and were welcomed by Jeff Launius, Manager of the Explorers, who was an outstanding host. Also assisting with this event was former Tiger Tennis student-athlete, Brent Filbert and Jan Bleakley, mother of former Tiger Tennis student-athlete, Kristin Bleakley.
Along with a half-time that recognized the new coaching staff, the team had the chance to promote their upcoming season.
“We had a Mizzou tent where we sold Missouri tennis t-shirts and passed out information about our team,” Schmid said. “It was a great outreach to our friends on the West.”
Besides receiving information on the team and being able to purchase shirts, fans were able to review the blue prints for the new outdoor courts that are planned to be complete for the upcoming season.
The KC Explorers Night was an exciting event for Explorers and Mizzou fans alike. The Explorers won the match versus the Sacramento Capitals, results shared below. Bob and Mike Bryan, the top ranked professional doubles team in the world, led the star-studded Explorers team, along with Kveta Peschke, who won the 2011 Wimbledon women's doubles title (with Katarina Srebotnik). The Bryan Brothers were in Kansas City fresh off their own doubles title at Wimbledon (their 11th Grand Slam title overall, and second at Wimbledon), and a doubles win in the Davis Cup over the team of Fernando Verdasco and Marcel Granollers from Spain. "It was so exciting to meet Kveta and the Bryan Brothers, who are such nice people and tremendous tennis players," said Schmid.
