Columbia, Mo. – Friday night initiated Big 12 play when the Missouri Tigers faced the Baylor Bears at the Green Tennis Center and fell for the first time this season at home. Missouri attempted to come back from losing the doubles point but fell short. Despite this, the Tigers are still considered a strong team and will look to improve their ranking in their next matches.
According to Baylor head coach, Joey Scrivano, “Missouri is a really improved, veteran team that is playing well.” This held true when the Tigers kept fighting spirits going from doubles play into singles.
In doubles, Jamie Mera and Marlen Hacke came away with a 8-4 victory on Court 3 while Mallory Weber and Kaitlyn Ritchie fell 8-5 and the combination of Rachel Stuhlmann and Maria Christensen were short of a win 8-4 which sealed the doubles point for Baylor.
The Missouri Tigers came away with victories on Courts 5 and 6 with Mera winning her singles match against Ormond (6-2, 1-6, 1-0) and Stuhlmann finishing off her opponent 6-0, 6-4.
Competing against No. 11 Sona Novakova, No. 51 Nina Secerbegovic, No. 36 Diana Nakic, and No. 94 Jelena Stanivuk, the Missouri Tigers' Ritchie, Weber, Hacke and Christensen gave fine match efforts in their attempt to beat the Bears. Christensen controlled the first set against Stanivuk but Baylor had a comeback to overcome her lead (7-5, 6-7, 8-10).
Missouri will travel to Florida on March 7 and 8 to face William and Mary and Michigan State. The next home matches will be against the Minnesota Gophers on March 11 at 6 p.m. and the Drake University Bulldogs on March 12 at 10 a.m. at the Green Tennis Center.
