LINCOLN, Neb. - The Mizzou track and field team wrapped up day one of the 36th Annual Husker Invitational on Friday (Feb. 4) inside the Bob Devaney Sports Complex and saw several student-athletes turn in top-notch performances. Senior Lana Mims (Tulsa, Okla.) was the Tigers' top finisher on the day as she earned a runner-up finish in the women's long jump with a leap of 5.83m (19-1 ½), just off of her personal-best indoor mark of 5.98m (19-7 ½). Chris Holly (Topeka, Kan.), Cara Forte (Kansas City, Mo.), Lars Rise (Trondheim, Norway) also turned in great performances on the first day of the meet.
The Tiger women, fresh off of winning the Bill Bergan Invitational last weekend, had plenty of great performances on day one. Forte advanced to tomorrow's 200m dash finals with a time of 25.24 as she won her heat while posting the seventh-best time out of 41 competitors entered in the event. Her time is also a personal-best. Sierra Gant (Wichita, Kan.) placed 10th in the event with a time of 25.45, just missing tomorrow's event finals. Mims, after finishing second in the long jump, also had a nice performance in somewhat of an off-event as she clocked a 60m time of 7.78 - just 0.08 off of her personal-best in the event - to earn 12th overall in the race. That time placed her third in her heat as she just missed qualifying for tomorrow's event finals. Forte was 16th overall in the 60m dash at 7.86
Holly continued his fine throwing as of late on Friday with another big throw. In fact, Holly registered his third-best throw of the season at 18.62m (61-1 ¼) to earn seventh overall in the men's weight throw. Rise, one week removed from posting the nation's eighth-best heptathlon mark, placed 10th in the long jump on Friday with a leap of 6.94m (22-9 ¼), a season-best.
Melissa Coil (Clark, Mo.) was another highlight for the Tigers in the field events as she took ninth in a very competitive women's weight throw field. She threw a season-best 17.25m (56-7 ½), surpassing her previous season-best of 17.17m (56-4), which she also set at Nebraska at the Adidas Classic two weeks ago. Megan Collins (Lee's Summit, Mo.) was also just shy of making the finals with a throw of 17.12m (56-2), placing her 12th overall.
Heather Green (Jefferson City, Mo.) placed 14th in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.67m (12-0 ½), just off of her season-best vault of 3.70m (12-1 ½). Mizzou will be back in action at day two of the Husker Invitational tomorrow morning, beginning at 10 a.m. For all the latest on Mizzou track and field, stay tuned to MUTigers.com.
