Minneapolis, MN. - The first day of competition at the University of Minnesota Invitational proved to be lucrative for the Missouri Tigers.
In singles competition, sophomore Rachel Stuhlmann succeeded over her opponent, Jenna Langhorst, of Iowa State in two sets 6-0, 6-2. All the while, her teammate, Maria Christensen, also defeated her singles opponent in two sets 6-0, 6-1. The Tigers' senior, Jamie Mera, overcame Kaitlin Burns of Louisiana State University 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7). Missouri newcomer, Alex Clark, also flourished in the competition after defeating Alex Erickson of Gustavus 6-0, 6-2.
All the while, in doubles flight, the pairing of Mera and Christensen had a successful showing when they beat Gaard and Krebsbach of Gustavus 8-4 in order to progress to the next round. Mera and Christensen are in the semi finals of doubles for Flight 1 after their win against Minnesota.
"We had a good first day. The girls competed well," said Head Coach Sasha Schmid. "Overall we went 7-3 in singles and doubles combined."
The Tigers will continue to compete in Minneapolis Saturday and Sunday.
