COLUMBIA, Mo. - In this week's look at the Tigers in the national track and field rankings, the names remain the same from last week's update as Brian Hancock (Monroe City, Mo.), Lars Rise (Trondheim, Norway) and Kearsten Peoples (Ottawa, Kan.) all boast top 25 rankings in their respective events. Rise is still the nation's highest-ranked Tiger as he checks in at No. 10 nationally in the men's heptathlon.
Rise, the school's third-ranked heptathlete all-time, has posted a top score of 5,578 in the event this season and sits 10th nationally. Rise will use this weekend as a tune-up as he looks towards the Big 12 Championships where he will be one of the favorites to take home the heptathlon title - he is currently ranked first in the league in the event. Should he take home the title, it would mark the second straight year in which a Tiger has claimed a Big 12 Championship in the event after Nick Adcock took home the award last season.
Hancock, just days shy of nearly coming within centimeters of breaking his own school record in the pole vault, sits 19th nationally in the event with his season-best clearance of 5.25m (17-2 ¾), which he has set at a pair of meets, including last week's ISU Classic. He also cleared that height at the Adidas Classic earlier this season. Hancock owns the school indoor record in the event at 5.37m (17-7 ¼).
Lastly, Peoples sits at 22nd nationally in the women's shot put after her Mizzou freshman record toss of 15.86m (52-0 ½) two weeks ago at the Husker Invitational. She is still ranked as one of the nation's top freshmen in the event and sits at seventh in the Big 12. However, she is the only freshman in the Big 12 to rank in the top 10 in the league and is the third-best true freshman on the national descending order list.
Several Tigers appear very close to cracking the top 25 as well. Both Brooks Mosier (Lee's Summit, Mo.) and Corey Jones (Lee's Summit, Mo.) threw season-best marks in the shot put last weekend at the ISU Classic and now rank 32nd and 36th nationally in the event, respectively. Junior high jumper Stacy Swineburg (Camdenton, Mo.) also ranks 38th nationally in the women's high jump at 1.75m (5-8 ¾). With a big weekend at the Tigers' final regular season home meet on Friday, all three of those names could be mentioned in next week's rankings update.
Mizzou will be back in action this Friday as it hosts the Collegiate Challenge at the Hearnes Center Field House. For all the latest on Mizzou track and field, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on twitter at @Miz_TrackField.
