COLUMBIA, Mo. – Thirteen Tiger wrestlers competed in the Roger Denker Open at the University of Central Missouri on Saturday, with 12 coming back having placed in the event.
Cody Farinella (141), Kellen Bounous (149), Drake Houdashelt (157), Jordan Gagliano (165), Dustin Williams (184), Ryan Robinson (197) and Jake Glore (HWT) completed perfect days to take home the title in their respective weight classes. Luke Cherep (141), Ty Prazma (165) and Devin Mellon (HWT) each earned runner-up finishes, while Simon Kitzis (141) and Johnny Eblen (184) finished sixth.
Farinella scored bonus point in his first three matches, winning his first by fall in 1:40 before rallying off two straight major decisions before knocking off a pair of Tiger grapplers in Cherep and Kitzis on his way to the title. At 149, Kellen Bounous picked up a pin in 2:39 in his second match while winning the other three by decision as he took first place.
Houdashelt opened things up with a 17-0 technical fall victory and followed that up with a 13-0 major decision. After a fall in 5:53 in his third match, Houdashelt landed a 10-2 major decision in the championship match. Gagliano opened with 9-1 major decision and moved on to the championship when his semifinals opponent was forced out due to injury. In the finals, Gagliano knocked off fellow Tiger Prazma by a 6-1 decision.
Robinson finished 3-0 at 197 pounds, pinning his first opponent in 1:01, getting a 3-1 decision in the semifinals and pinning his championship match opponent in 4:41. Williams scored decisions of 4-3 and 7-4 before beating his finals opponent by a 7-2 score. Glore opened action at heavyweight with a win via fall in just 0:59 before scoring decisions over his next three opponents.
