Mizzou Tennis returned to action this weekend as they competed in the 2011 Memphis Winter Invitational in Memphis, Tenn. Competition started for the Tigers on Friday, Jan. 14 and lasted until Sunday, Jan. 16.
Interim Head Coach Steven Stuckenschneider and Interim Associate Head Coach Helena Besovic directed the Tigers as they faced the Memphis Tigers, Brigham Young University and the University of Mississippi.
Early morning Friday, Mizzou faced BYU in doubles. Doubles partners Annemijn Koenen and Rachel Stuhlmann prevailed 8-0. Kaitlyn Ritchie and Mallory Weber rallied, but came up short, 8-6, while Maria Christensen and Jamie Mera fell, 8-5.
Later that day, Mizzou competed against Memphis in singles. Jamie Mera defeated Andrea Arques-Garcia 1-6, 6-2, 6-1. Players Kaitlyn Ritchie, Mallory Weber and Maria Christensen battled closely against Memphis. Saturday proved to be a strong day in singles for senior Mallory Weber who defeated Elle Carney of BYU and Jamie Mera, junior, who beat BYU's Desiree Tran.
That same day, Mizzou competed in doubles against Ole Miss. It was a successful day for Kaitlyn Ritchie and Mallory Weber when they won at the number one spot against ranked competitors.
Competition Sunday was filled with 3 doubles matches against Memphis and 6 singles matches against Ole Miss. In doubles, the Tigers went 0-3 while they went 1-5 in singles. Freshman, Rachel Stuhlmann, had an impressive performance against freshman Ole Miss player Vivian Vlaar.
Mizzou will host their first match of the season at the Green Tennis Center on Sunday, Jan. 23 with competition beginning at 9 a.m. against UMKC and finishing the contest against SEMO at 4 p.m.
