Mizzou Football Game Notes
Mizzou (2-0) 50, McNeese State (1-1) 6
Sept. 11, 2010 - Columbia, Mo.
Team Notes
- Missouri improved to 85-31-4 all-time in home-openers following tonight's win. The Tigers have now won five consecutive home openers and are 8-1 in home openers under Gary Pinkel.
- Missouri scored 33 first-half points vs. McNeese en route to a 33-0 halftime lead. The last time Missouri topped 30 points in a half was last year at Colorado. The Tigers led CU 33-3 in that contest.
- While many FBS clubs have struggled this season vs. FCS teams, Missouri has dominated teams formerly from Division I-AA over the last few years. Missouri defeated Furman 52-12 last season and Southeast Missouri State 52-3 in 2008. Missouri is now 10-0 all-time vs. FCS foes.
- Missouri's defense has been outstanding this season, primarily from the second half of last week's win vs. Illinois when the Tigers held the Fighting Illini to just 85 second-half yards through this week's win vs. McNeese State. Prior to a fourth-quarter TD by the Cowboys, Mizzou's defense had shut out both Illinois and McNeese for five consecutive quarters.
- The last time Missouri shut out a pair of opponents for five consecutive quarters was 2008. Mizzou shutout CU 58-0 and then blanked Baylor in the first period the following week during a 31-28 win in Waco.
- Missouri ran its regular season non-conference winning streak to 19 games. Missouri's last non-conference loss in the regular season came vs. New Mexico in 2005.
- The Tiger Defense has also been outstanding producing turnovers this year. Missouri has picked off six total passes in two games. In 13 games last year the Tigers had just eight total picks. Including fumbles Missouri's defense has nine total turnovers. Missouri boasts a +6 turnover margin.
- Missouri true freshmen ran for 173 yards and four scores on 20 carries tonight. Marcus Murphy ran nine times for 33 yards, Henry Josey carried seven times for 112 yards and three scores, and true freshmen quarterback James Franklin ran four times for 28 yards and a score.
Individual Notes
- Blaine Gabbert broke the Missouri school record for completion percentage in a game (minimum of 20 attempts) with his 26-of-31 passing for a percentage of 83.9. The previous school record was held by Chase Daniel who completed 83.8 percent of his passes (31-of-37) vs. Colorado in 2008.
- Gabbert opened the game completing his first 15 passes for 129 yards on his way to the record day.
- Gabbert finished the day with 220 yards and a score. The junior has seven consecutive 200-yard days and is now 60-of-79 for 501 yards and three scores without an INT.
- Over the last two seasons Gabbert has feasted on non-conference teams (regular season) hitting 147-of-210 passes for 1,662 yards and 14 passing scores without an INT.
- Henry Josey had a monster day in his first career game at Faurot Field. Josey scored three first half TDs and finished the day with seven carries for 112 yards and a long of 62.
- Josey is the first Missouri true freshman to score three rushing TDs in a game since Corby Jones ran for TDs of 1, 1 and 9 yards vs. Iowa State in 1995. Jones was also the last Missouri true frosh to break 100 yards rushing in a game. Jones ran for 136 yards on 22 carries vs. the Cyclones.
- True freshman James Franklin joined Josey in the end zone. The Texas native ran for an eight-yard TD in his first action as a Tiger.
- Kevin Rutland picked off his first pass of the season. Rutland now has four career INTs.
- Andrew Gachkar picked off his first career pass in the third quarter. Gachkar also had a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery in the win.
- Kenji Jackson recorded his second INT of the year and fourth for his career.
- Carl Gettis is becoming a punt downing guru for the Tigers. Gettis downed his second punt inside the one vs. McNeese State after accomplishing the same feat last weekend vs. Illinois.
- Although TJ Moe saw little action in the second half the sophomore topped double figures in receptions once again with 10 catches for 79 yards. Moe had 13 grabs for 101 yards in the season-opener.
- Michael Sam had a huge day for the Tigers, further solidifying Mizzou's defensive end depth. Sam blocked his first career punt at the start of the third quarter and recorded his first career safety in the second period. On that safety he was credited with a sack and a forced fumble.
