Head Coach Mike Anderson Quotes
Opening Statement:
“I thought our team got better today. We came in and held Presbyterian to 18 points at halftime and that was playing 10 guys that first half. So some of the things I wanted to see with our team defensively was guarding people, guarding the perimeter and being efficient. And you can't be any more efficient than getting 13 assists on 14 field goals. That being said I thought we, for the most part, did the job defensively, creating tempo. Passing moves, and shots we missed. Think about it we had 13 assists on 14 field goals and we missed an easy layups in there so it's coming, you can see this team is coming. I was proud of them because we had three tremendous games that they spent a lot of emotion and energy in. And to play a game where you have finals, you're in the midst of finals you want to play well so I was happy with the results.”
“That's what we brought him here to do. I thought he looked a lot more comfortable. And if you look at those two guards, they have 23 assists. One got 9 and one got 6, so that's 15. That's good productivity there.”
“It was great to see Justin. He's a senior that's going to help our basketball team. I thought he was a lot more relaxed and really fluid out there on the floor. He's one of those guys who knows to cut and slash to the hole, rebound the basketball, he can fix things on defense. It was good to see. The last few workouts he's been doing that in practice so it was good to see him bring that practice to the game. “
On Safford regaining confidence after injury:
“I think each and every game. He was a starting early on and of course now you have to make that adjustment with the knee coming off the bench as well. It takes a while to make that adjustment but I had a chance to talk with him today and I said, 'just go play man' and I thought he did.”
On Mike Dixon:
“Well I think Mike's quickness and energy. He's a point guard that can score and I think he's using his quickness to help our basketball team. And he is creating some opportunities for himself and others as well. I think the competition each day in practice it makes you step your game up and we'll keep that competition going. But you have to get better as a player. I think that's one of the things with our program. The players get better as they develop. But he's still got a ways to go.”
On how proud he is of Marcus Denmon:
“Marcus each and every game, he just continues to play good basketball. He was efficient today. If you look at his stat line he got four assists, one turnover and three rebounds. He's playing the game the right way. The thing I like about him is defensively he's talking. He's trying to fix things. It's good to see him really just kind of emerge as a player that's hopefully going to be one of the better players in the Big 12.”
Freshman Guard- Dallas, Texas
On Being Aggressive:
“It's always hard. It's a whole different type of game style and the experience will come as I play more. I've just been trying to figure out what my role is and I'm trying to find ways to help the team. Coach told me to just play defense and you will be rewarded.”
His Improvement:
“It's just a process. Coach Anderson just stays positive with us and lets us go out and make plays. I am seeing the game and it's slowing down. This happens to a lot of freshmen. I just have to learn after each game and each practice.”
Senior Forward - Bloomington, Ill.
On recovering from his knee injury:
“Every now and then it gives me problems. But it's just something I've got to play through. It's just a process.”
“Every day he comes to work and he gets better. Every game is not going to be a perfect game, but he brings a good mentality every day.”
Junior Guard - Kansas City, MO
On losing his cousin:
“It's always tough for anyone who loses a loved one, and I lost my cousin. He was like a brother. I mean we grew up together. I knew he would want me to be on the court.”
On his play the last two weeks:
It's about taking good shots and playing as a team. Some nights another guy may be on and that's who we'll get the ball to. You have to play as a team, move the ball and the open shots will come. Then it is us to knock them down.”
