MIZZOU PLAYER QUOTES
Michael Dixon
On Georgetown's high shooting percentage...
"It's tough. We were out there trying to do what we were supposed to, as far as keeping people in front of us, but I guess everybody gets a night like they got tonight. Every time I looked up, it was just going in. I don't really know how to explain it but I guess we just didn't pressure the ball as much as we could, but it just felt like they made every shot. They're a good team, it wasn't luck, they just hit shots tonight and made free throws, which is something we didn't do down the stretch."
"There's no excuse, I just missed the free throw. I kind of pride myself on shooting free throws, and I take responsibility for that, I kind of let my team down. There are about 50 different things that you could say if it went the other way in this game we could have won, but I'm a point guard and point guards make free throws."
"It was awesome. These are the games when you're a little kid you live to play. You've got to relish these moments, because you never know what can happen on any given day. The only minus is that we didn't get a win for us as well as the coaches and fans, and that's what really hurts the most. Let's be honest, it was our first huge game, and we fought but we didn't step up. We can use this as a wake up call to get back in the win column."
On Mizzou's comeback in regulation...
"Early, they're going to make shots sometimes. It felt like eventually they would stop making shots because we were out there rotating and we were playing really hard. Give credit to Georgetown, because they made shots. It was early when we got down, and we stayed the course and worked hard and finally chipped the lead away and took the lead. I felt we had the game in control, but at the end you have to finish games with defense and free throws. Our defense got us back in the game, but we've got to zero in and knock in free throws. It's not every day a whole team goes perfect from the free throw line, but that's the goal. They did it and we didn't and that's the difference in games."
"We just took what the defense gave us. If the drive is there, that's what you want to get first-- the high percentage shot. After we started driving, the open jumpers started opening up, and that's just how it happened."
"You'd always rather play games than practice, and it would be a lot worse if we had to go home and practice after a loss like this. We're going to try to keep getting better and take what we learned from this game. Oregon is a good team as well and we could be in some of the same situations, but this time we want the ball to roll in our favor. We want to continue to work on those things to finish the game."
GEORGETOWN Head Coach JOHN THOMPSON III
Opening Statement...
"I think we accomplished everything we wanted to tonight. This is a very good win against a good, well-coached team. You have to be prepared and attentive for 40 or 45 minutes because if you start to relax and make mistakes, they will take advantage at both ends of the court. A lot is made of Missouri's press, but their half-court defense is just as effective if not more effective. We got down late in the game, but our players showed great poise."
On the similarities between Missouri and Georgetown's BIG EAST opponents...
"Missouri is tough, and they play hard. They play physical like a BIG EAST team. They have great depth and the motion offense Missouri runs is similar to the teams we play in the BIG EAST."
On the pace of play throughout the game...
"We don't worry about pace. We just want to get a good shot whether that takes three seconds or 33 seconds. We never come into a game determined to play fast or slow."
On sustaining Missouri's second-half runs...
"When you play against good teams in hostile environments you have to fight through those tough shooting stretches. We have a tough team, and it doesn't surprise me that we were able to bounce back."
On the differences between this year's Georgetown team and last year's squad...
"This year's team is deeper than last year's, and playing our second unit doesn't create much of a dropoff. We were fortunate tonight to get quality minutes from our bench when our starters in the frontcourt got into foul trouble. It's also important that all of our players have confidence in their teammates to step in and hit big shots."
GEORGETOWN PLAYER QUOTES
Chris Wright - Guard
On his last shot in regulation...
"It surprised me because two guys ran up on me when I was dribbling up the court. I was just trying to find an open man. I trusted that anybody that shot the ball was going to make the shot in. I tried a tough shot. Jason does what he does and just ran for the rebound and kicked it up to me. I felt like it was going in and so I just kept my hand high and just released it."
On the team's free throws...
"The thing that sticks out to me is that we went 18-18 from free throw line. I think that's the biggest change that happened in the game. We have been struggling from the line a little bit this year and to see that we made all of our free throws in a place like that, that was really hostile and was supposed to be a neutral site but... (Coach Thompson) "nothing neutral about that."
On winning a game in the environment...
"We're going to enjoy this win but it's important for this team to stay even-keel. We've been in this situation where we've won big games early in the season before and it can either go up or go down so we just have to go back to work and it's just another win. We have to keep a repoire. I don't think you can make it a bigger picture than it is."
Jason Clark - Guard
On his three 3-pointers in the overtime...
"Like Chris said he had confidence in anybody that was going to take the shot. He found me wherever I was and I was wide open. They played good defense, but you have to find the gaps and he found me in the gaps and I was able to take the shots."
On being 1-for-6 from the 3-point line going into overtime...
"I was not aware of that but these guys beside me told me to keep shooting. They have confidence in me, so I kept shooting."
