San Antonio, Tx. -- For the first time in two years the Missouri Tigers are not Big 12 Champions. The No. 6-seeded Tigers fell 4-1 to No. 3 Nebraska in the first round of the the Big 12 Tournament under very windy and chilly conditions. The loss eliminates Missouri from the single elimination-style tournament.
"We came out with a great game plan today and fought very hard," head coach Bryan Blitz said. "I can't thank the seniors enough for all of their efforts today, this year, and over their past four years here. The loss is disappointing but you can't weigh enough the amount of experience this team gained going forward into next year."
Going against a steady 20 mph wind in the first half, the Tigers fell behind 2-0. Missouri pulled within one minutes later, however, scoring in the 32nd minute on a free kick. Freshman Dominique Richardson served the ball from near the top of the center circle deep into the box. The Nebraska keeper and a defender collided as the ball arrived, leaving senior Krista Kruse a near open net to score the Tigers' only goal.
Nebraska netted a third goal right before half and added a fourth goal midway through the second half. The Huskers advance to play the winner of No. 2 Oklahoma State and No. 7 Texas Tech on Friday evening.
