IOWA STATE vs. MISSOURI
NOV. 20, 2010 - JACK TRICE STADIUM
AMES, IOWA
IOWA STATE POSTGAME QUOTES
Iowa State Head Coach Paul Rhoads
Opening statement
"I'll say this about our football team, they came to play. We had 18 seniors, I don't know how many of our 18 seniors played but they played their heart out. Our entire football team played with that same kind of belief and determination the entire game. You have to execute, you can't have mistakes like we did against the 15th-ranked team in the country. You can't turn the ball over, you can't give up special teams fakes, you can't miss field goals and you can't do things like that and expect to win football games. We are building this football team and those are the kinds of things we will correct. Those are the kind of things that won't happen anymore."
On the offense in the red zone
"Big momentum changes in the game. Our offense moved the football. When you get shut out, you don't feel real good about what you had done all week and what you have done for 60 minutes. When you don't score, it is very deflating. The plays where we missed field goal points hurt, but I thought our kids responded from that adversity. They kept playing. We have been a good red zone team, we were not tonight and it was one of the factors in the outcome of the game."
On not getting sixth win
"College football is about bowl games. A year ago when I took over the football program I said our expectation was to win a bowl game. After that season was over, I was asked about that again and I said 'That is not an expectation for 2010, that is an expectation all the time.' You play college football to compete and play in bowl games. It is very disappointing with this team. We had opportunities to get to six and beyond and we didn't get them."
On Jerome Tiller
"Jerome played with everything he's got. He felt a large burden on his shoulders today. This was different from taking over in the middle of the season. This was a game you have to win if you want to go bowling, this game you are playing for a senior class playing in their home stadium for the last time, you are playing for a quarterback that's career has ended. Overall, I thought he responded to it pretty well. Did he play a perfect game? No. But did he play a pretty good game? We will have to watch the film and see."
Quarterback Jerome Tiller
On pressure on him
"I prepared to be the starting quarterback, my heart goes out to Austen. I just feel like I let down my team. I wasn't able to come up with a victory."
On the difficult schedule
"It says a lot about us, but still five games isn't the goal we want to achieve. With our tough schedule, it still says a lot about the coaching staff and the players we have on the team."
On missing out on a bowl game
"It's very disappointing to not go to a bowl game or win a championship, but in the off-season we just need to get things done and get the ball rolling to prepare for next season."
Missouri Head Coach Gary Pinkel
Opening Statement
"First of all I am proud of our team for battling. Iowa State played very, very well."
"It is great to play defense like that around here at Missouri. That is probably the best defense we've played since we've been here."
On fake punt
"We've been working on it this week. We had the option to check out of it if we wanted to. They executed it so well. Momentum-wise, that was huge for us."
On WR Michael Egnew
"It's amazing how much better he's become. He's a great athlete with a great work ethic. He makes a lot of big plays, but he makes a lot of tough plays."
Cornerback Carl Gettis
On getting a shutout on the road
"We had to come out here and overcome a lot of adversity. We came out and kept competing and kept playing hard, we were fortunate enough for them to miss a couple of field goals. We got good presses from our D-line."
On fake punt call
"That's a lot of confidence in the punting team because that's a big play. We had a number of big plays that changed the momentum of the game. It was a great call by Coach, he said in practice that he saw the look and it would work when he called it and he called it so it was the right time."
WR Michael Egnew
On Missouri's offense
"Blaine (Gabbert) is a technician behind the football. When the weather's bad, it's the worst to try and get an offense to go. But Blaine and the running backs did a great job today."
