Scouting Lindenwood
The Lindenwood Lions enter the season under first year head coach Chad Smith who takes over for longtime coach Joe Parisi, who stepped down at the end of last season. Parisi guided the Lions to national prominance at the NAIA level over the past decade, as they've won five national championships and finished second twice over the past 10 years.
The Lions are ranked No. 8 in the NAIA rankings, and have yet to compete in a dual this season. Two of their projected starters for Sunday are nationally-ranked, as 165 pounder Drae Cox sits at No. 10 in the country and 174 pounder Chris Chionuma is second.
Missouri holds the all-time edge over Lindenwood, winning all seven of their previous duals. These schools last met in 2003-04, with the Tigers winning by a 44-9 final.
Scouting Hofstra
The Hofstra Pride, led by fifth year head coach Tom Shifflet, are receiving votes in the NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll and enter this weekend's duals with a 1-1 record. Hofstra opened their season on Nov. 6 with a tri-meet against Purdue and Edinboro, both ranked No. 23 at the time. The Pride split the two matches, falling 28-6 to Purdue but upending Edinboro by a 26-8 score.
Hofstra comes into the weekend with seven ranked wrestlers in their projected lineup. Senior Lou Ruggirello, a 133 pounder, comes in at No. 6, while 165 pounder P.J. Gillespie, a junior, ranks seventh. Other Pride grapplers who are ranked are Steve Bonanno (No. 21, 125 pounds), Vince Varela (No. 24, 141 pounds), Ryan Patrovich (No. 14, 174 pounds) and Ben Clymer (No. 17, 184 pounds).
The Tigers hold a 6-0 advantage all-time against Hofstra. These two schools have faced off in each of the last three years, with the Tigers winning 22-21 in 2007-08, 22-12 in 2008-09 and 34-7 last season.
Scouting Oregon State
The Oregon State Beavers are guided by head coach Jim Zalesky, now in his fifth year at the helm in Corvallis, Ore. OSU enters the weekend ranked No. 17 and are 0-0-1 on the year. Last weekend, the Beavers tied then-No. 2 Boise State, 18-18. Oregon State found themselves down 14-0 to the Broncos, but rallied off five straight wins to battle back for the tie.
Seven of Oregon State's projected starters are currently ranked, with five of them sitting in the top 10. 174 pounder Colby Covington ranks highest amongst his teammates, coming in at No. 9. Jason Lara (125), Kelly Kubec (133), Mike Mangrum (141) and Clayton Jack (HWT) are all ranked as high as 10th. Brice Arand, OSU's 184 pounder, and Chad Hanke, their 197 pounder, sit at No. 30 and No. 26, respectively.
The Tigers and Beavers have faced off just twice in their history, with Mizzou winning both matches. Both contests have come within the past three seasons, with Mizzou winning 28-13 in 2007-08 and 26-10 in 2008-09.
