Columbia, Mo. - Missouri Gold scored six early runs and withstood a four-run rally by the Tiger Black in the seventh inning to claim a 6-4 win in the annual Fall World Series held at Taylor Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Gold now owns a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series, which will continue on Monday at 4 p.m.
Matt Stites got the victory for the Gold, pitching 6.1 innings, while recording seven strikeouts. Jeff Emens took the defeat.
The Gold got on the board early, plating a run in the first on a Ben Turner single to center. Jesse Santo led off the inning with a single to right field and moved into scoring position thanks to the first of four Black Team errors on the day.
Two more errors would allow the Gold to score five runs in the second. Back-to-back singles by Andrew Thigpen and Dillon Everett started the rally and a throwing error by Emens on a sacrifice bunt attempt allowed Thigpen to race home. Brannon Champagne drove home his first run with a sacrifice before Santo drove home a run with another sacrifice fly to shallow right. A Scott Sommerfeld double continued the Gold surge and he would later score on a throwing error by third baseman Conner Mach. That error allowed Turner to reach base once again and advance into scoring position for Garrison McLagan, who ripped a single to center to cap the five-run frame.
The Black charged back in the seventh to cut the score to 6-4. Mach opened with a double to center and a walk by Eric Anderson and a single to second from Lusardi loaded the bases. Ryan Ampleman then drew a walk to score Mach and Carlile's single to left plated both Lusardi and Anderson. After a Gold pitching change, and a pop out to second base, Belfonte ripped a double to score Ampleman, bringing the visitors within two runs.
The Black would threaten once again in the eighth inning, loading the bases with outs, but Carlile grounded into a fielder's choice to halt the threat.
Belfonte, Mach, Lusardi and Carlile each paced the Black squad with two hits, while two hits apiece from Santo, Sommerfeld and Thigpen led the Gold.
