Post Game Quotes
Head Coach Mike Anderson
Mizzou vs. Nebraska, 1/23/10
Opening Statement:
“It was nice to finally get a game under our belts after the week off and guys getting into the routine of things with school. I thought we took a big step today in terms of getting better. We had some guys that came off the bench and gave us some great, great minutes. A guy like Miguel Paul—you can see he's getting there, and to see him step up in a game of this magnitude was good to see. To me, it wasn't as much about his offense as his defense and energy. Nebraska came here with a game plan that they were going to grind it out, and I think in the first half that was to their liking. In the second half we injected Mike Dixon into the lineup to give us a little bit more quickness. I think it helped us in a sense to bring Zaire Taylor off, and then when he came back in he was able to get us in an even better position. It was a big game for us, and it was really good to see our guys step it up in the second half.”
On playing a team like Nebraska:
“I think you've got to be patient. They're going to grind it down and it tests your patience when you're a team that's up tempo. We may pass the ball one time, five times, or sometimes twelve times, but they might pass it twelve times every time. You've got to lock in on people and make sure their key guys don't have an effect on the game. They started off with four guards, which made them a much better ball-handling team, so in a game like this forcing twelve turnovers against Nebraska is a lot of turnovers. The first half I thought we kind of settled for the jumpshots, and in the second half we did more attacking. That's why you saw the free throw line pick up and also the scoring pick up.”
On the upcoming game against Kansas:
“It's Kansas—they're a very, very good basketball team, one of the top five in the country. If you talk about keying in on one guy, then another guy will step up for them. A lot of things go through Sherron [Collins], and we all know that, but you've still got other guys capable of throwing up some big numbers. They're more experienced, and they're playing better this year, so when you talk about challenges it's a big one. They have a great atmosphere there, and I think when you're a basketball player you look forward to playing in great venues. That's a great venue. We've got a great venue here too. To me, we're going to see if we can go there and get better. We know it's going to be a big challenge, but I think that's why you play the game.”
On heading to Kansas coming off a tough win:
“There are no easy wins in the Big 12. Every night, it's going to be a war—I don't care where you play. You could go play at Douglas Park or parks in Kansas City and it will still be a war. With that being said, I think you'd rather go in on a winning note than on a losing note.”
Missouri Player Quotes
On Miguel Paul lifting team during shooting trouble…
“Miguel coming in and giving the team the energy and production that he did it was very big for this team. He gave us exactly what we needed to get over that hump.”
On Nebraska's half court defense…
“They were really trying to slow the game down. We really had to get open.”
On importance of playing Mizzou's style of play in Lawrence against Kansas…
“It's very important. If we go to Lawrence and play their game we don't have a chance. But that's with any team in the Big 12 we have to go in and play our game, and impose our will to have the best chance at winning.”
On focus for this game with Kansas game on Monday…
“We didn't even think about Kansas. This whole week was about preparing for Nebraska and working hard.”
On playing in Lawrence against Kansas…
“It's a tough atmosphere. They are a really good team and Kansas is just a tough environment to play.”
On these 15 points being his first 15 of Big 12 play…
“It's good when you've got people like Justin rebounding. Him and Kimmie were getting rebounds and making it easy for me.”
On And1 being the turning point of the game…
“Justin and Keith noticed that they were staying in the paint, and if they screened we could make it happen.”
On how game was last year at Kansas…
“It's real loud. It's like everyone is looking down onto you and its real, real loud. That's about it.”
On 2nd half Nebraska play…
“That's what Coach has been emphasizing, the last 10 minutes those are our minutes. That's our time to really impose our game, our second wind and really take it to them. I could feel it myself (starting to get tired). This is how we play and they don't play how we play so I can only imagine what it was doing to them.”
On challenges against Kansas…
“They have a lot of different weapons with Aldrich, Collins, Henry. All around they are just a great team so it's going to be really important for us to play our style of basketball.”
Nebraska Head Coach Doc Sadler Post-Game Quotes
Nebraska vs. Missouri
Mizzou Arena, Columbia, Mo
Saturday, January 23, 2010
Opening statement…
“I thought, going into the game, transition basketball would be key. I thought we did an excellent job in that area. Keeping them (Missouri) off the free-throw line would be key. For about thirty minutes we did a nice job in that area. And the rebounds, I think we gave them 19 points off of rebounds, second chance opportunities. You add that to, what'd they get, 18-19 free throws? You're not going to be able to win. On the road you can't ask for a better effort. I thought we took a bad shot in transition, they go down and score, and you know, with eight (minutes) to go, it's a five-point game, Missouri's up, that's where you want to be, against Missouri on the road. There's just a four or five-minute period where we don't play. It's been that same formula for these first four games.”
On benching freshman forward Christian Standhardinger
“We tried different guys tonight. We had some guys step up that I thought did some nice things. But I made a decision to not play Christian (Standhardinger) because of his academic situation. You know, we'll come back the right way. As I told the team, there have been way too many guys that have represented this program in the right way. There's a right way to talk to people and there's a wrong way to talk to people. We've got too many young guys to let anything go. I'm not saying I would have let it go if it were a senior dude, but I'm darn sure I'm not going to let anything go with these young guys. I went into it thinking I would play him in the second half, but it just didn't go that way.”
On freshman guard Ray Gallegos' play…
“You look at Ray (Gallegos), and you think he played better, because he hit some shots. But he's getting more aggressive. That's the thing I like about Ray. He went in and battled there early, but you've got to make free-throws. It wasn't like he went out there and didn't try.”
