On Wednesday, the Detriot Tigers defeated the Texas Rangers, 4-1, behind seven innings of shutout work by Detriot starter and former Mizzou pitcher Max Scherzer. Scherzer struck out five and allowed just four hits to pick up his seventh victory of the year.

Scherzer, who pitched at MU in 2004-06,wasn't the only former Missouri star on the field in that game. Ian Kinsler, who was a second-team All-Big 12 selection for Mizzou in 2003, was 1-for-3 and scored the Rangers only run of the game.

Doug Mathis, who pitched at Missouri in 2005, turned in one scoreless inning of releif work for Texas.

Scherzer is 7-7 on the year and has 100 strikeouts in 105.2 innings pitched. He has record a win in five of his last seven starts for Detroit.

Kinsler, who earlier this month took part in his second All-Star Game, is hitting .304 with six home runs and 38 RBI. He also has 15 doubles and a triple on the year.

Mathis has appeared in 12 games for the Rangers this year in two seperate stints with the MLB club. He is 1-1 on the year with 10 strikeouts. His win earlier this year was the third of his career
