May 18, 2010

COLUMBIA, Mo. - University of Missouri women's soccer player Alysha Bonnick is one of 28 players selected by Canada Soccer to participate in the Senior National Team training camp beginning Tuesday, May 18 in Gaithersburg, Md.

Bonnick is part of a core group of 15 players that return from the team's camp in China last month, where Bonnick made her international debut as a second half substitute in a 2-0 loss to the China Women's National Team.

Canadian Head Coach Carolina Morace will hold a 10-day camp at the Maryland SoccerPlex from May 18-27, featuring a match against Women's Professional Soccer's Washington Freedom on Sunday, May 23.

The team then departs on May 27 for a weeklong camp in Hamar, Norway, leading up to an exhibition against Norway's Women's National Team on Thursday, June 3 at the Øvre Vang Stadium. The matchup with former World Cup and Olympic champion Norway kicks off at 6:00 pm local time, 11:00 am CST, and will be broadcast live on Norwegian TV2.

The call-up continues Bonnick's rise through the ranks of the national team program after participating in the Canadian U-20 National Team camp in Vancouver as a freshman. The North Gower, Ontario, native began her career at Missouri earning 2007 Big 12 Rookie of the Year and freshman All-American honors. She enters her senior season this fall with 30 goals and eight assists, and was named to the Hermann Trophy watch list prior to her junior season.

Canada, ranked No. 10 in the latest FIFA world rankings, is preparing for the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup, tentatively scheduled for late October to early November. The eight-nation tournament will qualify the region's top teams for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany, with Canada attempting to qualify for their fifth consecutive World Cup tournament.
