AMES, Iowa - Tiger senior Nick Adcock (Kansas City, Mo.) set a school and Big 12 Championship record with 5,938 points en-route to winning the 2010 Big 12 Indoor Heptathlon Championship on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 27) inside the Lied Recreation Center. The Conference Championship is Adcock's second Big 12 heptathlon title and reset the school record by 143 points. He also finished 171 points ahead of the next closest competitor in the event - Moritz Cleve of Kansas State - who was the 2009 Big 12 heptathlon champion. He won three of the seven events in the competition.
"This feels so great. Now, I just need to stay healthy and get after it because I think that I have a lot left in me," Adcock said after the competition. "Last year was such a tough year because of all of the injuries; I just could never get into a consistent training schedule. But everything came together today. The high jump synched up, the pole vault was amazing and I thought I ran pretty well in the hurdles. It was nice to win the last event yesterday and come back this morning and win the first two. It really helped me pull away from everyone heading into the 1,000m run."
"Nick is just a great example of a champion," head coach Rick McGuire said. "He has worked so hard to get back to this level, and to set a meet and school record makes it that much more of an accomplishment. He is a great kid and I can't say enough about what he has done here. It was just really fun for me to see all of his hard work pay off this season. But, I think he still has a lot left in the tank moving forward."
Heading into the day with an event-leading 3,250 points after day one, Adcock blazed the short track to an event title in the 60m hurdles after clocking in at 7.98, earning him 987 points in the combined competition, his most of any of the seven events. He also shined in the pole vault after setting a personal-best of 4.90m (16-0 ¾) en-route to winning the event. That win earned him 880 points in the competition. He finished his day by running 2:44.80 in the 1,000m run to seal the victory.
Junior Layne Moore (Emporia, Kan.) was another highlight of the day for the Tigers as she claimed the Big 12 title in the 1,000m run with a time of 2:50.12 after running a blazing final lap to make up four positions. It is her first Big 12 title and was the second on the day for the Tigers. She also scored 10 points in the team competition for the Tigers and for a junior that had an injury-filled summer, the victory left her in tears.
"I am beyond happy right now," Moore commented after the race. "It is one of those things that you lay in bed and think about at night. It makes a horrible summer of injuries and surgeries worth everything to me. I am so happy to represent a school that has done so much for me too. There is not another program in the Big 12 that would have stuck with me and done all of the things for me that Mizzou did over the last year. The coaches and everyone involved have given me so much so I am just really happy to be able to give them a Big 12 Championship in return. This is just a dream come true."
A complete release of recapping all of the Mizzou's action at the Championships will be posted following the conclusion of the meet. For all the latest on the Mizzou track and field program's day at the Big 12 Championships, stay tuned to MUTigers.com.
