Postgame Notes
Missouri and Texas have faced off three times in Big 12 Championship play. Missouri holds a 2-1 advantage, as both previous games went to extra innings. The winning score of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship game has been by less than nine runs only three times in the 13 years of the tournament's history.
Texas (41-13-1, 3-1 for the Championship)
Texas stands at 26-16 in the Big 12 Championship.
With today's victory, Texas becomes the fourth team to win both the regular season and postseason Big 12 baseball championships. This is the second time the Longhorns have accomplished the feat, with the first coming in 2002. Nebraska is the only other team to achieve the title sweep, with those coming in 2001 and 2005.
Preston Clark belted his first home run of the season and the 22nd of his career, in the bottom of the third inning to knot the game at 1-1.
Texas set a Big 12 Championship record for RBI in an inning with 11 in the bottom of the fourth this afternoon.
The Longhorns extend their record when being nationally televised to 6-1.
Cameron Rupp knocked his first grand slam of the season in the bottom of the fourth. Rupp paced the Texas offense, going 1-for-3 with four RBI.
With the win, Texas earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. UT will host the NCAA Austin Regional beginning on Friday, May 29.
Missouri (34-25, 2-2 for the Championship)
Missouri now stands at 16-22 all-time in Big 12 Championship play.
Today's game marks the second time Missouri has played in a Big 12 Baseball Championship game. In 2004, the Tigers fell in 13 innings to Oklahoma State by a score of 10-9.
Missouri employed its pitcher-by-committee method in this afternoon's game for the 18th time this season. They used eight pitchers this afternoon allowing 12 runs on nine hits. Their record now falls to 12-6 when using this tactic.
Austin Holt, a senior, scored the first triple of his career. Holt finished the day 1-for-2 with one RBI.
Missouri is now 14-4 in their last 18 games and will await the NCAA regional pairings, which will be announced Monday at 11:30 a.m. (CT).
