COLUMBIA, Mo. - - Mizzou junior Kyle Gibson set a new career high by striking out 13 batters in the Tigers' 4-1 win over Ball State on Friday night at Taylor Stadium. Gibson gave up just one run on six hits and walked only one batter in eight innings pitched to move to 2-1 on the season.
The win is the 19th of Gibson's career as he improved to 19-8 as a Tiger. Gibson's previous career-best in strikeouts was 11 against Toledo last season.
Missouri (4-7) trailed 1-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth inning, when it put three runs on the board. Freshman Ryan Gebhart, in the starting line up for the first time in his career, drove in the first two runs on a bases loaded single.
Gebhart was 2-for-4 on the day, adding a single in the second inning.
Junior Michael Liberto followed Gebhart with a single to drive in the third run of the inning.
Mizzou added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning when junior Kyle Mach reached on an error and, after two walks moved him to third, scored on a wild pitch.
Senior Ryan Lollis was 1-for-4 on the day, recording a single in the fifth inning to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Lollis has had at least one hit in 10 of MU's 11 games this season.
Senior Scooter Hicks pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his second save of the year and the 13th save of his career.
Missouri and Ball State (4-3) will be back in action with a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
