AUSTIN, Texas - - Missouri won its Big 12 Conference opener for the fifth-straight season, defeating No. 1 Texas, 2-0, on Saturday in game one of a doubleheader. It was Mizzou's first shutout over a Big 12 opponent since a 3-0 win over Oklahoma State last April.
The Tigers (8-8, 1-0 Big 12) have won nine of their last 11 meetings with the Longhorns, including four of the last five played in Austin.
Mizzou junior Kyle Gibson picked up his first career nine-inning complete game. He does have two seven-inning complete games in his career. Gibson struck out 11 on Saturday and improved to 3-1 on the year.
In the top of the third inning, juniors Kyle Mach, Michael Liberto and Greg Folgia and freshman Conner Mach delivered four-consecutive singles for MU. Kyle Mach scored on Folgia's hit and Liberto crossed the plate on Conner Mach's single to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Those would be the lone runs scored in the game.
The complete game shutout was the first by a Missouri pitcher since Aaron Crow's 3-0 win over Ole Miss in last season's NCAA Regional.
