PHOENIX, Ariz. - - Mizzou closed out the Grand Canyon Classic in Phoenix, Ariz. with a 13-9 loss to Gonzaga on Sunday. The Tigers, who fell to Nevada earlier in the day, wrapped up the season opening weekend with a record of 1-3.
Missouri took the early lead in Sunday afternoon's game with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but fell behind after a four-run top of the second by Gonzaga. The Bulldogs then scored twice in the third inning to take a 6-1 lead.
The Tigers answered with a four-run bottom of the third. Senior Kyle Mach singled to drive in a pair of runs and senior Ryan Lollis followed with a two-run home run to pull the Tigers to within one. Lollis drove in three in the game, finishing 3-for-5.
Gonzaga followed the Tigers' big third inning by plating three runs in the top of the fourth and then added a run in the sixth, scored twice in the eighth inning and put one on the board in the ninth.
Junior Greg Folgia led off the seventh inning with a home run, the sixth of his career. Folgia was 3-for-4 with the home run and two doubles. He scored three runs and had one RBI. Folgia also came on to pitch 0.2 innings in relief.
The Tigers added a run in the eighth inning, then scored twice in the ninth, getting an RBI single from junior Trevor Coleman and a double by senior Steve Gray, which drove in one.
"You can't pinpoint just one area and say that is the area we need to get better," Head Coach Tim Jamieson said. "It's everything. We didn't run the bases well, didn't play defense well and made mistakes at bad times."
Mizzou will remain in the Phoenix area to face Arizona State on Tuesday in Tempe, Ariz. First pitch between the Tigers and Sun Devils is set for 7:30 p.m. CT. It will be the first of five games for MU at Packard Stadium as the Tigers will participate in the ASU DeMarini Invitational next weekend.
