Missouri Player Post-Game Quotes
Austin Peay vs. Missouri
Mizzou Arena, Columbia, Mo
Sunday, December 27, 2009
Missouri Head Coach Mike Anderson
On the scoring run at the end of the half...
"You never know when the run is going to occur. We're one of those teams that can go on a spurt at any point in time, and what a great time, right before the half. That's what this team's capable of. But let me tell you this, Austin Peay is a good basketball team. All you have to do is look at the teams they've played and how they've played. Coming in here, this was one of those games that I was worried about because this is a good basketball team. Sometimes a team can catch you at the right time, especially coming off the Illinois win. We are a young basketball team, but not only that, we were coming off Christmas break as well."
On passing the ball well...
"Well again, that's the ultimate team. That's the unselfishness of this basketball team. They're sharing the wealth. When you have balance like that, it's hard for teams to key in on certain guys."
On shooting the ball well...
"We were shooting 62-percent, that's a pretty good shooting day. We shot the ball well from the three-point line and from the field. We'll take those stats, especially in a game of this magnitude. But I still think we need to show up on defense."
On Marcus Denmon...
"Marcus is focused and he's a little healthier this year. You are seeing some of that in terms of explosiveness. He's playing with a toughness that I like and hopefully he'll continue to get better."
Sophomore Guard Marcus Denmon
On why Missouri surged ahead at end of the first half...
"We just focused on intensity. We wanted to really play some defense and get some stops. Austin Peay was a good team. If we would have continued to play flat we could have lost the lead."
On Missouri's high amount of total assists on Sunday...
"Every game we come out with the same mindset on offense, sharing the ball. We try to be one of those unselfish teams. No one puts the ball in their hands and tries to do it themselves."
Sophomore Guard Kim English
On pulling away from Austin Peay late in the first half...
"We're a defensive-minded team. So Coach sees us flat as our defense being flat and not aggressive and not getting steals and deflections and charges. They were shooting close to 80% at the first media timeout and they were getting lay-up after lay-up. We were scoring and exchanging baskets but we let them dictate the tempo at the beginning. So we just got it together and came out more aggressive."
On changes made in the first half to increase Missouri's lead...
"We went to playing zone and really made them shoot, capitalized on the rebounds. They're a really good team and I expect them to be damaging in their league, probably win it."
On how Missouri was able to take such a good shot selection...
"The defense is our team. The defense creates easy offense, spot-up dunks, back doors. That's the part of our game we want to be consistent in. When we're playing good defense, its going to be a fast-paced, our brand of basketball. The shots are going to fall, we're just focusing on the defense."
