IOWA CITY, Iowa – Mizzou's men's swimming and diving team dropped their final dual meet of the season Saturday, falling to the Hawkeyes by a score of 166-134. The Tigers fought hard and scored numerous wins on the day, but couldn't overcome many tough Iowa swims down the stretch. Missouri finishes their dual season with a 2-5 record.
“This meet had a very old-school feel to it,” said Tiger Head Coach Brian Hoffer. “This is one of the oldest pools in the country. There's a lot of history here. They had a big crowd and there was a lot of energy. Overall it was pretty intense.”
“I thought the guys stepped up and did well. This is a meet we would've liked to win, though we knew it would've been tough to do so on the road. We didn't take advantage of some touches. There were some close races we needed to win, but we couldn't do that, but we had some very good times for this point in the season.”
The day started off strong right off the bat for the Tigers, as the foursome of freshman Jan Konarzewski, junior Martin Cernansky, senior Gilad Kaufman and sophomore Jordan Hawley were victorious in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:32.12. Those four Tigers would all go on to earn wins over the course of the meet.
Cernansky led the way for Missouri, recording two victories and a second-place finish on the afternoon. He swept both breaststroke events, posting time of 57.02 in the 100 and 2:03.56 in the 200. The Austrian dominated the 200, winning by nearly four seconds over the runner-up finisher. Later, Cernansky went on to take second in the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.30.
Kaufman, like Cernansky, also notched two victories on the day, bringing his season total to seven. In the 200 fly, Kaufman won by more than two seconds after touching at 1:52.31. In the 100 fly, Kaufman secured the win with a finish of 51.27.
Konarzewski dominated the 200 backstroke, winning by over three seconds, and also posted a second-place finish in the 100 back. His time of 50.61 was just .06 behind the event's winner.
In the 50 free, Hawley notched his sixth win on the year, racing to a time of 20.84. Later, Hawley would come in third in the 100 free with his 46.23 finish.
The Tiger diving duo of sophomore Dante Jones and junior Greg DeStephen traded third and fourth-place finishes on the day. In the 1-meter, Jones scored 303.90 for third, while DeStephen took fourth at 284.48. Later, in the 3-meter, DeStephen secured third-place with a score of 343.20, while Jones came in fourth with 338.25.
Though the men have reached the conclusion of their dual season, they'll still be in action come mid-February with the Missouri Grand Prix, set to run Feb. 13-16 at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.
