COLUMBIA, Mo. - Senior midfielder Bree Thornton has been named this week's Big 12 Co-Offensive Player of the Week, as well as one of collegesoccer360.com's Primetime Performers of the Week, both of which were announced Tuesday. Thornton is coming off a weekend in which she scored three goals and tallied one assist to help lead the Tigers to two milestone victories at Walton Stadium.
On Friday, Sept. 25, Thornton set-up the eventual game-winning goal to Alysha Bonnick in the eighth minute of Missouri's 8-0 rout of Northern Iowa. Thornton would then get a hold of a Jessica Greer header in the 57th minute to score the fourth Tiger goal of the evening. The eight goal margin of victory is the largest in the history of the program.
The following Sunday, Sept. 27, Thornton scored the first two goals of the game for Missouri as the Tigers fought off an Oklahoma State rally to win 3-2, their first victory over the Cowgirls since 2005. Thornton made a clever turn with the ball near the top of the box in the 16th minute and fired a high shot into the upper right corner of the net to score. She would net again just two minutes later, getting a foot on a Michelle Collins cross to double the Tiger lead.
Thornton currently leads the team in goals (four) and points (10), and shares the lead in assists (two). The awards are the first of Thornton's career. She shares the Big 12 honors with Oklahoma's Whitney Palmer, who scored twice in the Sooners' victory over Texas A&M. The Tigers return to action this Friday, Oct. 2, on the road against Texas at 7 p.m.
