    Last Time Out
The Tigers went 3-1 and earned second place out of five teams at the Michigan/Pepsi Challenge last weekend. The Tigers topped VCU, Morehead State and Fairfield, but fell to No. 7 Michigan on its home floor. Both Julianna Klein and Paola Ampudia were named to the All-Tournament team after they combined for 84 kills while hitting .254 in the Tigers' four matches during the weekend. Klein led the Tigers with 50 kills while hitting .280 on the weekend.

With the 3-1 record, the Tigers now stand at 7-3 overall as they begin Big 12 play this week.

    Rookie of the Week
Junior Paola Ampudia was tabbed as the Big 12 Rookie of the Week for her performance during the Michigan/Pepsi Challenge. Ampudia posted 34 kills - including a career-best 12 against Morehead State - en-route to being named to the All-Tournament team. The honor is Ampudia's first career weekly honor. Along with her career-best 12 kills, Ampudia set career-bests in hitting percentage (.500), attacks (32), digs (seven) and total blocks (4.0) during the four-match tournament.

    Mr. 400
With the Tigers' win over Fairfield on Saturday, head coach Wayne Kreklow earned his 400th victory as a head coach. Dating back to his time at Columbia College where he coached both the men's and women's teams, Kreklow has compiled a 400-104 record as a head coach, including a 347-80 mark coaching women's volleyball. 80 of his 347 wins in women's volleyball have come during his time at Mizzou. For a complete list of Kreklow's coaching records, see the complete release link at the top of this page and take a look at page 16.

    Crown `Jules'
After getting off to a rocky start during the season-opening Tiger Invitational, junior outside hitter Julianna Klein has been named to two consecutive All-Tournament teams after her performance at the Michigan/Pepsi Challenge. Over her last six matches, Klein has posted 81 kills, 45 digs, six total blocks (three solo, three assists), five service aces and has hit .269 from the left side. She also hit better than .300 in back-to-back matches last weekend for the first time in her career, including a season-best .357 against Fairfield.

She has also posted a pair of double-doubles in that span - against Morehead State (16 kills, 10 digs) and at Michigan (12 kills, 11 digs) - to tie for the team lead in that category. She has also been nearly perfect on service receptions, committing only one reception error on 79 attempts. She has been perfect in her last five matches on 56 attempts.

    Milestone for Wang-Francisco
Senior setter Lei Wang-Francisco has passed out 329 assists this season, moving her into sole possession of third-place on the all-time career assist list at Mizzou. She now has 4,006 in her career, which passed former Tiger Cindy Atteberry. She now needs 948 assists to tie Michelle Gerber for second place. If she stays at her average of 32.9 assists per match, she would need 28 matches to do so. With only 22 matches left this season, it is a record to keep an eye on. Passing that mark would also rank her in the Big 12 all-time top five.

    Following in her Footsteps?
As Wang-Francisco's time winds down at Mizzou, freshman setter Kate Harris seems up to the task of taking over for her in the future. Harris has seen her playing time increase as of late, highlighted by the Tigers' match with Fairfield at the Michigan/Pepsi Challenge. After Wang-Francisco quarterbacked the offense in the first set, Harris came on and passed out 28 helpers in the final two sets, averaging 14.00 per frame, a career-high total. Harris now has 57 assists on the season and has gained plenty of valuable experience after coming off of the bench this season.

    Settin' `Em Up
Lei Wang-Francisco and Kate Harris have led a Tiger offense that ranks 17th in the nation in kills per set this season. The pair have assisted on 13.44 of the team's 14.12 kills per set, a mark that ranks ninth in the nation this season as well. Wang-Francisco ranks 37th in the nation in assist per set with 10.61

    ...It's Wendy's!
Tiger junior Weiwen Wang currently ranks fourth in the Big 12 with a .400 hitting percentage this season. Wang has committed only five errors on the season while posting 37 kills. Last weekend, Wang hit .435 with 12 kills to pace the Tigers in the middle. Wang is averaging 2.00 kills per set this season.

    An Ace in the Hole
Junior libero Caitlyn Vann, who leads the team with 134 digs this season, has added another element to her game this season. Vann has served up 15 aces this season, which ranks tops in the Big 12 this season while her 0.44 per set ranks her second in the league. Vann posted seven aces at the Michigan/Pepsi Challenge last weekend and now has 61 aces in her career, the second-most all-time among active players. She trails only Lei Wang-Francisco, who has 62 and an entire extra season under her belt compared to Vann, who is a junior.

    Scouting Kansas
The Jayhawks are coming off of a tournament win at Arkansas in which they did not drop a set while defeating North Texas, Jacksonville State, and finally, Arkansas in the tournament championship match. It was the first time that the team had swept three straight matches since 2005. Kansas (7-2) has won four straight after falling to Florida International during the Jayhawk Invitational September 4. Senior middle blocker Paige Mazour was named the Arkansas tournament MVP and leads the team in attack percentage at .383 and is second on the team in blocks. Also leading the way for the Jayhawks have been junior outside hitter Karina Garlington and sophomore right side hitter Allison Mayfield, who rank first and second on the team in kills at 116 and 101, respectively. Both were named to the Arkansas All-Tournament team.

The Jayhawks and Tigers split last season's series, as Kansas won the first match in Columbia, with Missouri returning the favor later that season with a five-set win in Lawrence. Mizzou leads the overall series with the Jayhawks, 46-33, and have won 10 of the last 14 meetings with Kansas, dating back to Oct. 19, 2002.

    Killin' `Em Softly
Entering this weekend, Mizzou currently ranks third in the Big 12 in kills per set with 14.12. Combine that with the Tigers' .243 hitting percentage, which ranks fourth in the league, the Tigers boast one of the top attacks in the league. Mizzou has also assisted on 13.44 of its 14.12 assists per set. What is even more impressive about this stat is that Mizzou does not have a single player in the Big 12's top 10 in kills per set. Instead, the Tigers have five student-athletes that average better than 2.00 kills per set. Mizzou joins Nebraska, Oklahoma and Baylor as the only schools in the Big 12 to have five individuals average at least 2.00 kills per set.

    An Efficient Attack
Mizzou hit .354 in its four-set win over Utah Valley last weekend, its best hitting efficiency of the season in a single match. That mark currently ranks as the second-best team hitting-percentage in a three-set match this season. Six Tigers hit better than .300 in the match while two - Paola Ampudia and Weiwen Wang - hit better than .400. Additionally, in the Tigers' three-set sweep of Ole Miss at the Tiger Invitational, the team hit .333. Five of the Tigers' top six attackers in the match hit better than .286 while Catie Wilson had six kills on seven attacks, hitting at a career-best clip of .857. Mizzou hit better than .333 just twice last season - .337 at Texas Tech (10/4) and .427 against Texas Tech at home (11/1). The Tigers efficient hitting is one of the reasons that Mizzou ranks fourth in the Big 12 in digs allowed per set in 2009 at 13.65.

    Hitting 70
Mizzou posted 70 kills in that match against Utah Valley as well, which is still the top mark in a single match in the Big 12 this season. The next seven spots in the top 10 were all posted in five-set matches, making Mizzou's 70 kills in a four-set match that much more impressive.

    Shutting `Em Down
Mizzou held its opponents to a .135 hitting percentage during the Tiger Invitational, including holding Texas State to a clip of .061, the Tigers' best opponent attack percentage since Sept. 5, 2008 when they held Maryland to a .019 hitting percentage. The Tigers also held BYU to a .130 hitting percentage, due in large part to a season-high 63 digs and 11.0 blocks. Libero Caitlyn Vann collected 18 digs in the match to lead the team. MU also held Morehead State to a .075 hitting percentage last weekend.

    Big Night for Brit
Tiger sophomore Brittney Brimmage tallied 13 kills with only one error on 20 swings in the Tigers' four-set loss to No. 17 Utah. That stat line gave Brimmage a .600 hitting percentage in the match, which is the fourth-best single match mark in the Big 12 this season. The .600 clip is also a career-best for Brimmage as she becomes one of only 26 athletes in school history to post a .600 hitting percentage with more than 10 kills.

    Ninth Time in Ten Seasons?
Since the Kreklows took over the Mizzou program in 2000, the Tigers have appeared in eight NCAA Tournaments and have ranked amongst the Big 12 and national elite. This season will mark Wayne and Susan Kreklow's 10th year at the helm as they will look to make it nine out of 10 in 2009. The Tigers' best NCAA Tournament run came back in 2005 when they advanced to the NCAA Regional Final after topping Hawaii in the round of 16.

    From Colombia to Columbia
Junior transfer Paola Ampudia joins the 2009 Tiger roster after spending two years at Miami Dade Community College. Ampudia, a Cali, Colombia, native, was dubbed Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year by the Big 12's coaches earlier this month. In 2007, Ampudia led Miami Dade to the National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) national title game and helped the Sharks to a 30-0 regular season record that season. For her efforts, Ampudia was named NJCAA National Player of the Year as she ranked in the nation's top 10 in both hitting efficiency (.578) and kills per set (3.85). Ampudia currently has 64 kills, 22 digs and 15.0 total blocks.

    A New Addition
There is a fresh new face on the Tiger bench this season and that face is assistant coach Chirs Muscat. Muscat joins the Tiger staff after spending two years as an assistant under coach John Dunning with the Stanford Cardinal women's volleyball team. At Stanford, Muscat was a part of two Pac-10 championship teams and two national runner-up squads. Muscat's many duties while at Stanford included player development, video analysis and opponent scouting. Stanford posted a 63-7 record during Muscat's tenure with the Cardinal and produced seven All-Americans.

As a player, Muscat was a member of two national championship teams at UCLA in 1998 and 2000 as a middle and outside hitter. Due to injury, he sat out during his last season and graduated with a degree in Biology. Muscat's primary responsibilities will be working with the Tigers at the net, working with outside hitters and middle blockers on their attacking and blocking technique, as well as playing a large role in the recruitment of future players to the Missouri program.

    One of Mizzou's Finest
Freshman Annie Lopez was recently named to the Omicron Delta Kappa list of top freshmen at the University of Missouri. Only the best 14 students in their first year of college are selected to the group and Lopez had no idea at the time that one of her fellow teammates believed she had the credentials to make the group.

"I received an e-mail one day and found out I had been selected a finalist for the award, and that Lei (Wang) had nominated me," Lopez said. "I was honored that one of my teammates would think so highly of me."

Getting nominated was the first step, but it was far from the last, as Lopez would need to write an essay and submit a resume to make it to round two. She made it to round two, which consisted of an hour-long interview where she, and 20 other people, would be asked questions about themselves and any obstacles they've overcome in their lifetime. Soon after she completed the entire application process, Lopez received word that she had been selected as one of the 14 Omicron Delta Kappa honorees for the 2009 class. Lopez' current major is Textile Apparel Management with minors in Spanish and possibly Business.
