Mizzou Basketball released its 2009-10 schedule on Tuesday, as 18 regular-season home dates, a trip to the South Padre Island Invitational and a daunting Big 12 ledger highlight this year's slate. Missouri will face 10 non-conference opponents at home this year, including Georgia from the Southeastern Conference, Oregon from the Pac-10 Conference and in-state foe UMKC.
The Tigers also make non-conference road trips to Vanderbilt and Oral Roberts and face Illinois in the annual Busch Braggin' Rights Game in St. Louis.
"This is another challenging schedule for our young basketball team, one that should help us mature and have us playing our best basketball at the end of the season,” Head Coach Mike Anderson said. "We like the balance of the schedule and we like the number of home court opportunities it creates for our fans.”
Missouri opens regular-season play on Nov. 17 against Tennessee-Martin, before hosting Texas-Pan American and Chattanooga in the opening rounds of the South Padre Island Invitational inside Mizzou Arena.
The Tigers then travel to South Padre Island, Texas, to face a staunch Old Dominion team on Nov. 27, before meeting up with either Richmond or a potentially nationally-ranked Mississippi State club on Saturday, Nov. 28.
The road trip continues for the Tigers on Dec. 2 with a game at Vanderbilt. The Tigers then return home to face Oregon in the third annual Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series on Dec. 5, before a trip to Oral Roberts on Dec. 9 closes out Mizzou's road slate for the non-conference season. Of course Missouri will travel to St. Louis to face Illinois on ESPN2 on Dec. 23, but won't leave the state again until a Jan. 13 meeting at Texas Tech.
After that Illinois contest, Mizzou closes out non-league play with four consecutive home games against Austin Peay (Dec. 27), UMKC (Dec. 30), Georgia (Jan. 2) and Savannah State (Jan. 6), before hosting Kansas State in the Big 12 opener on Jan. 9.
While Missouri's Big 12 schedule was released in July, a slight adjustment has been made to the Jan. 30 home tilt with Oklahoma State. The game will now be aired on either ESPN or ESPN2. A formal announcement from ESPN on the exact network should come two weeks prior to that game's tip-off. Additionally, Missouri's game with Oregon has been moved up to 4 p.m.
Tiger fans, be sure to check back with mutigers.com as the Mizzou Sports Network will release its television schedule at a later date. Game times and complete television details will be available at that time.
Schedule Notes:
Missouri currently has 11 nationally-televised TV games on its schedule, but that number could increase with the release of its full TV slate later this month.
Missouri could face up to three teams from the Southeastern Conference this season. The Tigers face Georgia in the return game of a home-and-home series and meet Vanderbilt to start a new home-and-home stint. The Tigers also have the potential to face Mississippi State in the final game of the South Padre Island Invitational.
Missouri and Vanderbilt are meeting for the fourth time in series history. The Commodores lead the series 2-1, including a 77-65 win in Nashville on Dec. 23, 1965. The last meeting in the series was Nov. 29, 1986, when Vandy defeated Missouri 69-54 in Wailuku, Hawaii, in the Silversword Classic.
Missouri will meet Oregon in the third annual Big 12 / Pac-10 Hardwood Series. Mizzou will travel to Eugene, Ore., next season.
Missouri and UMKC will meet for the third time in the past five seasons. Mizzou is 2-0 vs. the Kangaroos.
Missouri will face four teams from the state of Tennessee: Tennessee-Martin, Chattanooga, Vanderbilt and Austin Peay.
Missouri will have eight games vs. teams that participated in the 2009 NCAA Tournament: Chattanooga, Illinois, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas (twice), Texas and Texas A&M.
For the second consecutive season Mizzou will have 18 regular-season home games. The Tigers were a perfect 18-0 at home last year en route to their school-record 31 wins and NCAA Tournament Elite Eight appearance. Missouri currently carries a 19-game home court winning streak into the 2009-10 season.
There are a few repeat non-conference opponents for Missouri this year. The Tigers faced Chattanooga, Oral Roberts, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Illinois and Georgia last season. Mizzou also faced Mississippi State and UMKC two seasons ago.
