Four Former Tigers Conclude NBA Summer League Stints

Former Mizzou standout DeMarre Carroll concluded his summer league action this weekend as he helped the Memphis Grizzlies to a 5-0 mark in Las Vegas, Nev.

 

The Grizzlies finished off play on Sunday, as they earned a 76-75 win over San Antonio, when point guard Marcus Williams (Connecticut) hit the game-winning lay-up just before time expired.

 

Carroll scored a team-high tying 16 points in the victory, including a game high 10 points in the first half. The Birmingham, Ala., native hit 6-of-9 shots from the floor, while also ripping away  three steals. Carroll chipped in five boards in 30 minutes as well.

 

Carroll was third on Memphis' roster in both scoring and rebounding at 12.2 points and 4.8 caroms per game. In addition to starting all five contests, the Junkyard Dog ranked among team leaders with 58.5 percent shooting from the floor and tied for the team lead with 1.2 steals a night.

 

Carroll reached double figures in scoring three times in five games, including 16 more points in a win over the Los Angeles Clippers on July 16. The 6-foot-8 forward hit 7-of-9 shots in the 85-68 win.

 

 

Leo Lyons – Cleveland Cavilers

Lyons closed out his Las Vegas tenure this weekend playing in all five games for the Cleveland Cavilers. Lyons averaged 7.6 points in 14.2 minutes a night for the Cavs.

 

Lyons twice reached double figures, including 14 points in the summer league-opener against the Los Angeles Lakers and 13 tallies against Milwaukee.

 

Overall, the Kansas City native shot and impressive 64.0 percent from the floor, connecting on 16-of-25 shots. He also added 3.4 rebounds per game.

 

 

Thomas Gardner – Portland Trailblazers

Gardner participated in the third summer league of his NBA career as he played with his hometown Portland Trailblazers. The 6-foot-5 guard averaged 9.0 points in 23.6 minutes a game, earning one start.

 

The former Tiger played much-improved basketball over his final three games, where he averaged 12.0 points, including 15 points on Sunday in a 74-73 loss to the D-League Select. Gardner hit 3-of-6 shots from three-point range and 6-of-11 shots overall. He also chipped in three boards in the one-point loss.

 

Earlier in the tournament Gardner scored 14 points in a 111-93 loss to the Denver Nuggets.

 

Kareem Rush – Denver Nuggets

Rush was the fourth Tiger in action during the 2009 Las Vegas Summer League and played two games with the Denver Nuggets. He averaged 3.0 points in the two contests.
