Askren, Schavrien Finish Third

March 7, 2009

Lincoln, Neb.Two Tiger grapplers, junior Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis.) and sophomore Todd Schavrien (Poway, Calif.) finished third at 197 pounds and 133 pounds, respectively in the 13th annual Big 12 Wrestling Championships.  Competing in the NU Coliseum, Askren and Schavrien advanced through the consolation bracket and won two matches each in the afternoon session en route to their bronze medal victory.  Five Tigers will take the mat in the Championship finals beginning at 7 p.m. (CT).  The finals of the Big 12 event will air live on FSN as well as www.big12sports.com.

The fifth-ranked Tigers sit third in the team standings with 49 points.  Iowa State continues to lead with 64 points, while Nebraska is in second with 58.  Oklahoma State moved up to fourth with 40.5 points, while Oklahoma dropped to fifth with 32.5.

Schavrien was the first Tiger wrestler to win in the consolation bracket, besting Brian Shelton of Oklahoma, 5-3.  Earlier in the season, it was Shelton who topped Schavrien, 5-3, at the dual in Norman, Okla.  Avenging his opening round loss to Nebraska's Matt Vacanti, fifth-seeded Schavrien recorded a one point, 3-2, victory over the Cornhusker to take third in his first Big 12 appearance. Scoreless through the first period, Vacanti chose down to start the second and escaped in 25 seconds to take the first lead of the match.  Schavrien returned the Cornhusker to the mat with 14 seconds left in the second period, but allowed Vacanti the escape leaving the wrestlers knotted at two.  Wrestling in green ankle bands, Schavrien chose down to start the third and escaped in six seconds to regain his lead.  Hit with stalling in the final one minute of competition, Schavrien was able to hold on for the lead and eventual win.

Wrestling to his seed, Askren won his match against Eric Lapotsky of Oklahoma, 9-7.  Askren squared off with Oklahoma State's Clayton Foster in the bronze medal match and won the bout, 7-2.  The 2008 All-American was down one point, 2-1, entering the third period, but came through with a third period reversal and nearfall as well as 2:23 of riding time for the win.

Redshirt freshmen Troy Dolan (Blairsville, Pa.) and Dorian Henderson (Columbus, Ga.) as well as senior Andrew Sherry (Sewickley, Pa.) all finished the day in fifth at 125, 184 and 149 pounds respectively.
