St. Louis, Mo. – Missouri wrestlers Raymond Jordan (New Bern, N.C.), Michael Chandler (High Ridge, Mo.), Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis.) and Nicholas Marable (Collierville, Tenn.) finished the 2008-09 season as All-Americans closing out the third day of the NCAA Wrestling Championships with top-eight finishes at 174, 157, 197 and 165 pounds, respectively. Jordan finished third, while Chandler and Askren took fifth and Marable seventh. Junior Mark Ellis (Peculiar, Mo.), Missouri's final competitor of the Championships, will wrestle at heavyweight against Duke's fifth-seeded Konrad Dudziak beginning at 5:30 p.m. (CT) on ESPN.
Improving on his fifth place finish from one year ago, Jordan blanked Big 12 opponent Brandon Browne of Nebraska, 4-0, en route to a third place finish at 174 pounds. With the win, Jordan became Missouri's fourth wrestler to earn All-America honors in two different weight classes and ends his Tiger career with 123 victories. His career wins record stands fourth in the Missouri record book, while his season winning percentage (.875) ranks eighth. Jordan won back-to-back matches in the final day of NCAA action. Opening with a 4-2 win over 11th-ranked Quentin Wright of Penn State, Jordan avenged his Big 12 Championship loss to Browne by shutting down his offense and winning his first match of the season by shutout.
“It's a good feeling to end with a win,” Jordan said. “Last night I was really disappointed with my loss. I learned from last year that I needed to put that loss behind me and move on. So, I put a smile on my face and went out and competed the best that I could.”
Chandler, also a senior, ended his collegiate career by earning win No. 100 in the fifth place match against Matt Moley of Bloomsburg. With his 2-1 win, Chandler finished his season at 32-8 and his career at 100-40. Chandler is the 16th Missouri wrestler to join the century club and second to earn win No. 100 at the NCAA Championships. Jeff Urban was the last Tiger to do so, managing the win at the 2000 Championships, also held in St. Louis.
“It's really special to finish my career with a win like that,” Chandler said. “I'm excited to be an All American. Coming to Missouri was a hard decision for me several years ago. I wondered if I would walk into the wrestling room and be a practice partner for someone for four or five years of college. But coming to Missouri was the best decision of my life. This is a great way to end it all.”
Competing at 197 pounds, Askren improved on last year's finish of seventh as well as the seed that he entered the 2009 Championships with, sixth, to take fifth on the day. After suffering an early morning loss, Askren rebounded with a 3-0 win over Boise State's Brent Chriswell. The victory was Askren's second of the tournament over Chriswell. The two first met Friday morning and Askren collected a 4-1 win in the quarterfinals.
A two-time All-American, Marable earned his second consecutive honor with a seventh place victory at 165 pounds. After losing his opening round match, Marable ran through the wrestle backs finishing seventh with a 6-4 decision of Tyler Sherfey of Boise State. Marable was one of only four wrestlers at this year's tournament to suffer a first round loss and wrestle all the way back to All-America honors.
Ellis, Missouri's first NCAA finalist since 2007, will meet at center circle with Duke's Dudziak on live TV. Dudziak topped No. 1 seed David Zabriskie of Iowa State in the semifinals, 3-2.
