The Black team scored three runs in the top of the first inning of Missouri softball's Black & Gold game on Saturday on its way to a 7-2 victory.
The three runs in the top of the first for the Black team came with two outs, scoring two runs on a single by sophomore Kathryn Poet and one run crossing the plate on a double by junior Julie Silver. Silver was 3-for-6 on the afternoon.
Freshman Chelsea Thomas struck out three, allowing just one run on two hits in seven innings pitched and earned the victory. The two hits allowed by Thomas both came in the second inning, when freshman Ashley Fleming doubled and sophomore Lisa Simmons singled. Simmons' single drove in the first run of the game for the Gold team.
The Black team put a run on the board in the top of the sixth inning and each team scored a run in the ninth inning. The Black team's ninth inning run came on a solo home run by freshman Jaydee Young.
Senior Micaela Minner homered to leadoff the 10th inning for the Black team, the start of a two-run top of the 10th.
Junior Jana Hainey pitched the final four innings for the Black squad to finish off the win.
The Mizzou softball team opens up the 2009 season at the Georgia State First Pitch Classic in Atlanta, Ga. The Tigers will face Evansville at 9 a.m. on Feb. 14 in Atlanta in the season opener.
