Softball Holds Black & Gold Game Saturday

Feb. 4, 2009

The Missouri softball team will hold its annual 14 inning Black and Gold game on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m. (CT) at University Field (weather permitting). The game offers fans an opportunity to see the Tigers in action before they open regular season play the following week. The Tigers will be divided into two squads to help showcase their skills. Entrance to the game is free.

The Tigers received a No. 16 ranking in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Poll, released Tuesday, and were picked No. 2 in the annual Big 12 Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.

Saturday's game is the final preseason tune-up before starting regular season play in Atlanta, Ga. The Tigers will participate in the Georgia State First Pitch Classic, Feb. 14-15. The two day tournament features teams from Evansville, Virginia Tech, and Georgia State. Missouri returns 17 members of last year's championship team including All-American and 2008 Big 12 Freshman of the Year, Rhea Taylor.

Mizzou's first home game of the 2009 season is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 25, against instate opponent Saint Louis. Game times for the doubleheader are set for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Should the current cold weather persist, the Tigers will move the game from their home of University Field to the confines of Dan Devine Pavilion.
