Baseball Season Preview -- Part I: A Look Back at 2008

Feb. 14, 2009

The following is the first part in a five-part series previewing the 2009 Mizzou Baseball season. Before looking ahead to 2009, we take a look back at the 2008 season.

Once again, the Tigers competed in postseason play in 2008, marking their sixth-consecutive NCAA Regional appearance. MU is one of just 16 programs in the nation that can make that claim and is one of only two Big 12 teams among that group.

Missouri has become a regular contender in the Big 12 Conference and nationally. The Tigers continued to take the program to new heights in 2008. After opening the year with its highest ever preseason ranking of No. 6, Mizzou quickly moved up, reaching the No. 2 spot on March 24. That marked the highest ranking in program history.

In addition to milestones set by the team, several individuals had history-making performances for the Tigers, making 2008 a year to remember.

The season began for Missouri in Florida, where the Tigers won the Stetson Invitational with wins over UConn, Michigan State and Stetson. Before leaving the Sunshine State, the Tigers faced off with Central Florida, taking its first loss of the year in a contest that was shortened to seven innings due to the Tigers' travel arrangements.

The following weekend found the Tigers on the opposite coast, taking part in the USD Tournament in San Diego. Mizzou again put together a 3-1 weekend with victories over Cal, San Diego State and Cal Poly.

After its scheduled home opener was cancelled, Mizzou opened up its home season with a three-game sweep of Indiana State. Missouri followed that with a four-game sweep of Toledo.

The Tigers extended its winning streak to 13 with a win over South Dakota State and a three-game sweep over Baylor in the Big 12 Conference opener.

Mizzou took over the No. 2 spot in Baseball America's Top 25 after the sweep of Baylor.

The win streak hit 14 as MU opened a two-game set at Minnesota with a 17-8 win, which included a 4-for-4 night by sophomore Aaron Senne in his return to his home state. Senne hit two home runs and had eight RBI in the victory.

The 14-game win streak, which matched the fourth-longest in school history, was snapped as Minnesota took a 12-5 win in game two of the series.

The next two weekend series saw Mizzou win the first game of the three-game set, before dropping the next two. First at Texas Tech, then home against Oklahoma State, Aaron Crow would earn the Friday night win in the Tigers lone victory of the weekends.

Crow had a string of 43.0 scoreless innings pitched heading in to the Tigers' series with Texas. The streak had begun in his start against Cal on Feb. 29 and spanned six starts.

The streak came to an end in the first inning of the series opener with Texas, as Crow gave up five runs in the opening frame. However, he would end up with the victory in one of the wildest games ever at Taylor Stadium.

Mizzou defeated Texas by a score of 31-12 in game one of the weekend behind the bat of senior Jacob Priday. Priday was 5-for-5 on the night, setting the single-game school record with four home runs, nine RBI and six runs scored. The four home runs set a new Big 12 Conference record and tied for third most in NCAA history.

The 31 runs were the most scored by the Tigers since defeating Truman State 30-0 in 2003 and it was the most runs scored against a conference opponent since a 27-4 defeat of Nebraska in 1956.

The Tigers continued the onslaught with a 13-2 victory in game two, defeating the Longhorns for the seventh time in eight meetings. UT salvaged a win in game three of the weekend.

Two days after earning Big 12 and National Player of the Week honors after his performance against Texas, Priday became Mizzou's home run record holder, homering twice against William Woods on April 16.

Priday finished his career at MU as the career record holder in home runs with 55 and RBI with 240.

The Tigers won a series at Oklahoma for the first since 1971, winning the first two games of the series in Norman, before falling in the finale. They then took games one and two against Kansas State, before dropping the final game of the weekend.

Mizzou picked up another series win by taking two-of-three from Kansas in Lawrence. MU took game one behind Crow's 11 strikeouts. He improved to 11-0 on the year with the victory.

Kansas took game two of the series with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Tigers answered by posting a 12-1 run-rule victory. Kyle Gibson, who had picked up the save in the series opener, took the victory in the finale, striking out eight. He was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week following the impressive weekend.

Missouri closed out the regular season strong, with a dominating three-game sweep over Nebraska. Crow won his 12th game of the year in game one against the Huskers, setting a new school record for wins in a season, as he struck out eight in 8.1 innings pitched.

The Tigers then took a resounding 22-9 win in game two before closing out the sweep with a 7-3 win.

An RBI single by sophomore Trevor Coleman in the bottom of the 10th inning, gave Missouri another win over Texas in the first day of the Big 12 Championship. MU has defeated the Longhorns nine of the last 12 meetings.

Mizzou was eliminated from the conference tournament after losses to Oklahoma and Texas A&M.

The sixth-straight NCAA Tournament for Mizzou saw the Tigers heading to Coral Gables, Fla. for Regional play, where they opened with a 7-0 win over Ole Miss as Crow moved to 13-0 on the season.

MU then faced host-school, and the No. 1 overall seed, Miami, falling 6-5 to the Hurricanes. The Tigers had their season come to an end as Ole Miss won a rematch between the two teams, 9-6.

Crow took home a multitude of honors, claiming first-team All-America honors and being named the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year. He won the Clemens Award and was a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy.

In June, Crow became the highest-ever MU selection in the Major League Baseball Draft when the Washington Nationals took him with the ninth-overall pick. Joining Crow as draftees were Rick Zagone (6th round, Baltimore), Jacob Priday (11th round, Houston), Ryan Lollis (20th round, Detroit), Kurt Calvert (32nd round, Chicago Cubs) and Lee Fischer (46th round, Chicago White Sox).

The Tigers continued to build a winning tradition in 2008 as their postseason streak was extended. Missouri won 39 games in 2008, which tied for the ninth most victories in a season in school history. The Tigers have won at least 35 games in each of the last six seasons.

Mizzou's win over Stetson on Feb. 24 was the 2,000th victory in the history of Missouri baseball, making MU the 36th program in the nation to reach 2,000 wins.

Missouri also set records in the stands, as it recorded its three highest single-game regular season crowds in school history in the three-game series against Nebraska, including a new record regular season game attendance of 3,126 on May 17.
