Missouri Head Coach Brian Smith and his fifth-ranked wrestling squad are set to close out the 2008-09 regular season campaign with a pair of duals beginning with the third annual Beauty and the Beast event Friday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. (CT). Missouri will square off with ninth-ranked Central Michigan, while the Tigers' gymnastics squad competes against Illinois at the same time, on the same floor. Tickets for the evening event are $5 for adults and $3 for youth. Additionally, fans that bring two canned food items, to be donated to the Central Missouri Food Bank, will gain free entrance. All fans are encouraged to wear gold and support their Tiger team.

Those unable to attend Friday's dual can catch the action live on Mizzou All-Access, for a small fee. Please visit mutigers.com for details. Takedown Radio will also be broadcasting the event live and can be heard through the Missouri Athletic website at mutigers.com. Live stats for the battle featuring two of the nation's top 10 programs will also be available online.

Sitting with a 2-1 record in the Big 12, the Tigers will wrap up their conference schedule Sunday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. (CT) against second-ranked Iowa State. A win would give Missouri its first 3-1 conference record since the 2006-07 campaign as well as its second ever win against the Cyclones at home. The 2 p.m. dual will be televised on Fox Sports Midwest, Saturday, Feb. 21, at 4 p.m. (CT), Monday, Feb. 23, at Noon (CT) and Saturday, Feb. 28, at Noon (CT). In addition, Metro Sports will air the tape-delayed broadcast Thursday, Feb. 26, at 4 p.m. and Friday, Feb. 26, at Noon (CT). Columbia's very own KZOU will air the dual Saturday, Feb. 21, at 11:30 a.m. (CT). ABC Sports Director Beau Baehmann and 2004 Missouri All-American Kenny Burleson will call the action.

Coming off of back-to-back road wins against then No. 14 Oklahoma and No. 15 Oklahoma State, the Tigers are looking for their 18th win of the season when they take on Central Michigan Friday night. A victory would tie the Tigers for the most single season wins, a mark last set at the end of the 2001-02 season. Only two Missouri wrestling teams have ever reached the 18-win mark, the first, the 1967-68 squad coached by Hap Whitney, finished the year at 18-0-1.

Missouri's 10-man lineup is headlined by No. 1 ranked Mark Ellis at heavyweight. Ellis is one of six Tigers ranked among the top-10 in the nation in their respective weight class and has stood at No. 1 for three weeks running.

Scouting the Chippewas
The ninth-ranked Chippewas (14-2-1) head to the Hearnes Center Friday for their first road dual in nearly a month. Since their dual win on the road January 18 against Pittsburgh, Central Michigan has hosted five duals, going 3-1-1 over that stretch. Key matches included a 19-14 win against No. 23 Old Dominion and a 17-17 draw against No. 4 Nebraska. Leading the way for CMU are 125-pound freshman Scotti Sentes and 174-pound sophomore Mike Miller, both ranked ninth in their respective weight classes. Miller took an Olympic redshirt last season after earning All-American status as a redshirt freshman in 2007 when he placed eighth at the NCAA Championships. Sentes was a four-time Florida state champion and finished second as an eighth-grader in the Florida State tournament. 133-pound junior Conor Beebe, 149-pound junior Steve Brown, and 165-pound senior Trevor Stewart all qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2008 and come in ranked in the top-20 in their respective weight classes. Central Michigan is 2-2-1 all time against Missouri. In their last meeting during the 2006-07 season, the Chippewas fell to the Tigers, 31-9.

Scouting the Cyclones
Second-ranked Iowa State (12-2) will try to make it three straight over Missouri. Their last loss to the Tigers came during the 2005-06 season in the form of a 16-15 defeat in Ames, Iowa. The Cyclones have only lost to the No. 1 and No. 3-ranked teams in the country this season, and a large part is due to depth throughout the lineup. ISU has a wrestler ranked in the top-20 in every one of their weight classes, including seven in the top-10. Junior Jake Varner is ranked first at 197 pounds, which should make for an exciting match with fourth-ranked Tiger Maxwell Askren. Following that match, the two top-ranked wrestlers at heavyweight will square off when Iowa State junior David Zabriskie brings his No. 2 ranking onto the mat against top-ranked Tiger Mark Ellis. Other notable ranked Cyclones include junior Nick Gallick, third at 141 pounds, junior Cyler Sanderson at 157 pounds, and sophomore Jon Reader at 165 pounds. The Cyclones have won five straight coming into the match and have four shutout victories on the season.

Turning the Tables
The Missouri wrestling team did what few squads have been able to accomplish in Gallagher Iba Arena. Taking on the Cowboys of Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Feb. 7, Missouri's lineup combined for a 27-9 victory over OSU. The win handed the Cowboys their worst home loss since falling to fellow Big 12 North opponent Nebraska, 39-12, Feb. 14, 1993. Granted, Oklahoma State owns a dominating 32-4-1 lead in the all-time series, but the Feb. 7 win in Stillwater was rather sweet.

Missouri vs. Central Michigan...Rewind
Missouri and Central Michigan stand knotted at 2-2-1 in the all-time series. First meeting during the 1995-96 season, the Tigers took win No. 1, 18-16, in the first of three appearances at the Central Michigan Duals. The following year, 1996-97, Missouri and Central Michigan tied at 17-17. Two years later (1999-2000) the two teams met a third and final time at the Central Michigan Duals, with Missouri suffering a 24-10 loss. After a 22-9 loss to the Chippewas at the Virginia Duals (2000-01), Missouri found its second ever win over CMU, 31-9, Dec. 9, 2006 in Mount Pleasant. Current seniors Michael Chandler and Raymond Jordan along with junior Mark Ellis all contributed to Missouri's most recent win over Central Michigan and look to collect win their first home dual against the Chippewas Friday night in the Hearnes Center.

Missouri vs. Iowa State
The Tigers will face one of their oldest opponents when they meet with second ranked Iowa State Sunday afternoon in the Hearnes Center. The Cyclones hold a 43-3 lead in the all-time series that dates back to the1926-27 campaign and won last year's dual, 18-15, in Ames. Two of Missouri's three wins over Iowa State have come under current Tiger Head Coach Brian Smith. After a 50 year drought that yielded numerous losses to ISU, Smith's 2002-03 squad came up with a 24-11 win at home, Missouri's only win against the Cyclones in the Hearnes Center. Missouri's most recent victory over Iowa State came in 2006, when the Tigers managed a narrow, 16-15, win in Ames, the first win in Ames since the 1927-28 campaign.

Wear Gold!!!
The Missouri wrestling team has a request for its fans, please where gold! The Tigers would like to continue to pack the Hearnes Center and want everyone to show their Missouri spirit by wearing gold.

The No. 1 Ranking
Junior heavyweight Mark Ellis is the second Missouri wrestler this season to own a No. 1 ranking. Teammate Nicholas Marable opened his junior campaign ranked first at 165 pounds. The last time Missouri had two wrestlers ranked No. 1 in the same season, also at the same time, came in 2006-07, when the Askren brothers, Ben and current junior Maxwell, stood first at 174 pounds and 197 pounds, respectively.

The Connection
Missouri has two connections to Iowa State wrestling. Current assistant coach Shawn Charles, who has seen time as an assistant coach at four of the five Big 12 schools, served under former ISU coaching great Bobby Douglas from 1993-95 (two seasons). Tiger strength and conditioning coach, Kurt Backes, also knows the Cyclone program well, earning All-America honors his freshman and senior seasons at ISU. Additionally, Backes was a two-time Big 12 Champion (2005 and 2006), while wrestling at 184 pounds.

Smith Begins his Second Decade, Becomes Winningest Coach in Program History
Brian Smith is now in his 11th year as Head Coach of the Missouri wrestling team. The winningest Missouri wrestling coach in program history, Smith has notched a 136-63-2 record (.682), putting him ahead of former Tiger great Bob Kopnisky (.633) who coached from 1974-86. In addition, Smith became the winningest coach in program history after earning his seventh win of the 2008-09 campaign, Nov. 29, at the Northeast Duals. Earning a 41-3 victory, Smith's Tigers helped him ahead of Kopnisky who now stands second for wins with 125.

During Smith's time at Missouri, he has coached 11 All-Americans to 18 top-eight finishes at the NCAA Championships. In addition, Smith and his Tigers have managed a top-15 finish at the NCAA Tournament for five consecutive years, with the program's highest ever finish recorded in 2007 at third.

Looking For Win No. 18
Sitting with a 17-3 record on the season, the Tigers now own the second highest win total in program history. The most wins for a Tiger wrestling team is 18, set first during the 1967-68 campaign (18-0-1) and again in 2001-02 (18-3). Since Brian Smith took the reins of the program in 1998, the Tigers have recorded nine seasons in which they have tallied 10 or more wins in a single year. Missouri's 2009 dual against Missouri Valley on Jan. 18 resulted in a 33-12 win, giving the Tigers their most wins in a single season since the 2005-06 campaign (13). The last time Missouri had over 15 wins in a single season came in 2001-02, Smith's fourth year as Head Coach at Missouri.

The Last 10 Duals
When the Tigers take on second-ranked Iowa State Sunday afternoon, it will mark Missouri's fifth, top-10 ranked opponent in its last 10 duals. Since suffering a one point loss to sixth-ranked Ohio State, Jan. 10, at the National Duals, Missouri has defeated second-ranked Cornell, and dropped a loss to then No. 4 Nebraska. Missouri's Friday night dual against ninth-ranked Central Michigan is Missouri's 10th ranked opponent of the year.

Askren vs. the Simaz Brothers
Friday evening in the Hearnes Center, Missouri's 197-pound starter, Maxwell Askren, will meet with Central Michigan's Eric Simaz for the second time of his career. Askren collected a 12-2 win by major decision over the junior at the Midlands Tournament, Dec. 29. Also earlier this year, Askren held off Eric's brother Cam, a freshman at Cornell, 4-3, on Jan. 25.

Nothing Less Than Perfect Will Do
Three Missouri starters, senior Raymond Jordan, junior Mark Ellis and redshirt freshman Dominique Bradley are perfect in dual competition. Jordan, 20-0 on the season, competes at 174 pounds. Ellis and Bradley, both heavyweights, have also combined for a 20-0 mark, with Ellis shouldering 11 dual victories and Bradley, nine. In Big 12 dual competition, four Tigers own perfect 3-0 marks. Senior 141 pounder Marcus Hoehn, junior 165 pounder Nicholas Marable and Jordan. Ellis has collected two Big 12 wins, with Bradley winning his conference opener against Nebraska.
