COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Missouri soccer team used three second half goals from three different players to post a 3-0 win over previously undefeated Vanderbilt Friday night at Walton Stadium. The Tigers improve to 3-2-0 with the win while Vanderbilt falls to 5-1-0 on the year.
After a scoreless first half that saw numerous scoring opportunities from both teams, sophomore Alysha Bonnick gave Mizzou a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute. Junior Bree Thornton sent a cross to the top of the box that Bonnick settled before unleashing a shot to the right of the diving Vanderbilt goalkeeper. The goal was the second of the year for Bonnick.
Sophomore Kari Adam nearly added another goal when she fired a ball from the sideline that bounced off the crossbar in the 71st minute.
In the 79th minute, junior Meghan Pfeiffer added another goal for the Tigers for a 2-0 game. After a Vanderbilt foul deep in Commodore territory, senior Mo Redmond sailed the ensuing free kick across the goal mouth that found the head of Pfeiffer, who headed the ball past the Vanderbilt goalie.
The Tigers added their final goal of the game when freshman Mallory Stipetich sent a ball into the box from 45-yards out that bounced over the head of the Commodore goalie and into the back of the net. Pfeiffer earned the assist on the goal, which was the first of Stipetich's career.
Tiger goalie Tasha Dittamore recorded her third shutout of the season and recorded seven saves in goal.
Missouri returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 14 with a 1 p.m. contest against Vanderbilt at Walton Stadium. If weather makes Walton Stadium unplayable, the game will move to Rock Bridge High School at 9:30 a.m. Due to limited internet access, Mizzou All-Access will be unavailable if the game moves to a new location.
