Columbia, Mo. - The 19th-ranked Texas Longhorns (12-4/6-0 Big 12) defeated the Missouri Tigers (9-10/1-6 Big 12), 6-1, Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at the Green Tennis Center in Columbia. Texas won the doubles point, and five singles matches to stay perfect in the Big 12.
After Texas won the doubles point by sweeping the matches, the Tigers came out and won the first set in four singles contests. The Longhorns took the second and third sets in three of those matches, though. They also won straight-set matches in the No. 1 and No. 5 spot, to earn a 6-1 victory.
"We put ourselves in position today," Tiger Head Coach Blake Starkey said. "It was very exciting...we're playing smarter, it I just an issue of finishing it off. I can't say that I'm displeased, though."
Mizzou's lone win, a 6-4, 6-2, triumph by Modesto over Maggie Mello, was the only match the Tigers could finish off. It is Modesto's 22nd win of the 2007-08 season, and 10th of the spring. Her win moved her up to a tie for 15th on Mizzou's all-time singles wins list. She has won the most matches as a freshman since Katka Sevcikova won 24 in the 2001-02 season. Mosesto's 22 also marks the most wins by a Mizzou player since Sevcikova won 26 in 2004-05.
Among Mizzou's three-set matches, Texas' Courtney Zauft lost the first set, 6-4, to Mallory Weber at No. 2. Zauft then came back to win the second set, 7-6(9-7), and then dominated the third, 6-0, to take the win.
Senior Chrissy Svetlic won her first seat at No. 3 singles, in her final Mizzou home match, but Texas' Caroline Larsson came back to win the second and third sets, both by 6-4 tallies, to take the win.
At No. 6, UT's Abby Liu stopped Sofia Ayala's modest Big 12 win streak at two, coming back form a set down to win, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.
At No. 1, No. 64 Vanja Corovic beat Mizzou's Jessica Giuggioli, 6-0, 6-2, in the first match to finish. And at the No. 5 spot, Kaitlyn Ritchie jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the first set, but Sarah Lancaster came back to win it, 7-5, and took the second, 6-4, to win the contest.
Each of Mizzou's doubles teams lost by 8-3 scores.
Mizzou still has four regular season conference matches remaining, in addition to the Big 12 Championships. Next weekend, Mizzou will travel to Nebraska (April 11) and Iowa State (April 12). Results
