Lubbock, Texas - The Texas Tech Lady Raiders (9-6/2-2 Big 12) defeated the Missouri Tigers (9-7/1-3 Big 12), 6-1, Friday evening at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock, Texas. Texas Tech won the doubles point, as well as five of the six singles matches to take the win.
The Tigers had to battle the Lady Raiders, the road and the wind Friday. The match was played under a stiff east wind at 10 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph.
"It was windy out there today, and we couldn't feel the ball," Tiger Head Coach Blake Starkey Said. "They also played better than we did. We had our chances in the doubles, but we didn't play as well as we could have."
The Tigers did have their chances in doubles. At No. 1, Tech's top duo of Janet Durham and Samantha van der Drift beat Chrissy Svetlic and Mallory Weber, 8-2, at No. 1. But Mizzou's duo of Kaitlyn Ritchie and Jessica Giuggioli then won at No. 3, beating Kelsy Garland and Simone Templeton, 8-6, to even the doubles score at 1-1. The doubles point then came down to Kaitlin Dunham and Sofia Ayala's match at No. 2. Ayala and Dunham made the match close, but Brenna Jackson and Kerryn Potgieter pulled out an 8-5 win to clinch the doubles point for the Lady Raiders.
Tech then went on to take five of the six doubles matches to win their second Big 12 match of the season.
Mizzou's only win came in the No. 6 singles spot, as Ritchie earned her 9th win of the spring by taking a close first set against Maria Jose Andres, 7-6. She then cruised in the second set, winning 6-2, to take a 7-6, 6-2, victory.
Texas Tech won easily at Nos. 1 and No. 2 singles, as van der Drift defeated Giuggioli in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1, and Garland beat Webber by the same score at No. 2.
Templeton defeated Svetlic at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 7-5, while Durham beat Modesto, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 4.
At No. 5, Dunham took the first set against Potgieter, 7-5. Potgieter then won the second, 6-1, and the tiebreaker, 10-6, to take the win.
The Tigers will travel 350 miles southeast to Waco to face the second-ranked Baylor Bears, who shut out No. 67 Colorado, 7-0, Friday afternoon.
