Mizzou Defeats Southeast Missouri and Illinois-Chicago

Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri women's tennis team (7-1/0-0 Big 12) defeated Southeast Missouri (0-1/0-0 Ohio Valley), 7-0, and Illinois-Chicago (1-2/0-0 Horizon League), 5-2, Saturday inside the Green Tennis Center. The Tigers are off to their best eight-match start since 2003, when they won their first seven.
Mizzou easily defeated Southeast Missouri to begin the day, as the Tigers won each of the singles and doubles matches. Illinois-Chicago provided a tougher challenge, however.
"(Other than Arkansas) this is the best team we've played thus far," Mizzou freshman Kaitlyn Ritchie said. "We were tested, and it was good we won."
"They should have a lot of confidence right now," Head Coach Blake Starkey said. "We took care of what we needed to take care of (at home)."
Mizzou's 5-2 win over the Flames marked the closest match of the spring. The contest was not decided until Ritchie defeated Grace Gill-Morlis, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. Despite losing a close second set, Ritchie did not give up, coming back to win the third set easily to claim her seventh straight singles victory. She also earned a win in Mizzou's win over Southeast.
Tiger junior Jessica Giuggioli earned her 6th and 7th victories of the season Saturday, both in the No. 1 singles spot. The transfer from the University of Kentucky has won seven straight at Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4. Saturday was her first appearance in the No. 1 spot.
Mizzou freshman Maureen Modesto earned two wins on the day, defeating UIC's Amy Jellish, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5, and SEMO's Alyce Kelly, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4, to earn her 16th and 17th victories of the 2007-08 season, including fall action.
Sofia Ayala also earned two victories, defeating UIC's Jenna reisch, 6-2, 6-1, and Taylor Orahood of SEMO, 6-0, 6-0. Both matches were at No. 6 singles.
Tiger senior Chrissy Svetlic won the only match she played in Saturday, as she defeated SEMO's Drew Kristal, 6-0, 6-0.
Former Tiger, and current Flame, Lubica Nadasska, defeated Mallory Weber, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 singles, in Weber's only singles match of the day.
Kaitlin Dunham split her singles matches, taking a win against SEMO and falling against UIC.
Mizzou took both doubles points on the day, winning two of three against Illinois-Chicago, and sweeping all three matches against Southeast, only giving up four total games.
