COLUMBIA, Mo. - The No. 16 University of Missouri soccer team picked up a 2-0 victory over Baylor Friday night at Walton Stadium. With the win, Mizzou tied the program record for regular season victories with 12 and improved its record to 12-4-0 overall and 6-2-0 in Big 12 Conference play. Baylor drops to 5-10-2 and 1-6-1.
The Tiger offense came out firing in the early minutes, putting pressure on the Baylor defense. In the seventh minute, junior Kristin Andrighetto sent a shot from the edge of the box toward goal. Baylor goalie Gianna Quintana made the save but couldn't corral the ball, which found the head of sophomore Alysha Bonnick. The striker headed the ball right back on goal but Quintana made the save.
A Baylor foul in the Bear defensive end led to the Tigers' first goal in the 30th minute. A free kick from senior Ashley Hamblin to the near post found the head of freshman Candace Ruff, who headed the ball past the Bear goalkeeper and into the net. The goal was the first of Ruff's career, while Hamblin earned the assist, her fourth in three games.
Junior Meghan Pfeiffer added an insurance goal for the Tigers in the 77th minute to put the squad up 2-0. The midfielder gathered a loose ball 20-yards out and drove a left-footed shot on goal. The ball bounced off the head of a Baylor defender, hit the goalkeeper's gloves and fell into the back of the net for Pfeiffer's second goal of the year.
The Tigers outshot Baylor 25-1 in the contest, including a 13-0 shots on goal advantage.
