COLUMBIA, Mo. - The No. 24 University of Missouri soccer team used a goal in the second minute by junior Kristin Andrighetto to earn a 1-0 upset of No. 15 Colorado Friday night at Walton Stadium. With the win, Mizzou improves to 7-3-0 overall and 2-1-0 in Big 12 Conference play while the Buffaloes fall to 8-2-2 and 2-1-1.
"The team performed very well," said Missouri Head Coach Bryan Blitz. "Our depth was the biggest difference for us today. We want to wear people down and we feel like anyone who comes off the bench has the responsibility to play just as well as a starter. They've learned to excel in that role and that makes us dangerous as the game wears on."
Junior goalkeeper Tasha Dittamore notched her fifth shutout of the year to tie three former Tigers for the Mizzou single-season record. She also recorded four saves in the contest.
Andrighetto got things started early for Mizzou when she one-timed a pass from sophomore Alysha Bonnick past the Colorado goalie from nine-yards out to put the Tigers on top 1-0 less than two minutes into the game. The goal was the fourth of the year for Andrighetto, which ties Bonnick for the team lead.
Missouri nearly increased its lead when senior Ashley Hamblin was fouled in the Colorado defensive end in the 29th minute. Hamblin stepped up to take the 30-yard free kick but her shot sailed just over the crossbar.
Andrighetto had an opportunity for her second goal of the night in the 63rd minute after being brought down in the box. The forward took the ensuing penalty kick but Buff keeper Kristin Radinski sprawled out to make a diving save.
The Tigers kept up their offensive pressure in the second half and barely missed two scoring chances within a two minute span. In the 77th minute, junior Michelle Collins had a breakaway opportunity but pushed her shot just wide of the far past. One minute later, Bonnick had a clear shot at net from the top of the box but her shot clanged off the crossbar and was cleared by the Colorado defense.
Colorado's Caroline Danneberg had the squad's best opportunity of the night when she sent a 17-yard shot on net from the left corner of the box but Dittamore laid out and punched the ball wide.
Mizzou outshot Colorado 23-9 in the contest, including a 13-4 advantage in the second half.
The Tigers return to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 5 in a 1 p.m. contest with Texas Tech at Walton Stadium.
