Bentonville, Ark. - The 53rd-ranked Arkansas Lady Razorbacks (3-0) defeated the University of Missouri women's tennis team, 7-0, Saturday at the Walton Life and Fitness Center in Bentonville, Ark. Arkansas stayed perfect on the season with the win, while the Tigers begin the spring 0-1 after a loss against the undefeated Lady Razorbacks.
"Everybody got to hit against a good ball tonight," Tiger Head Coach Blake Starkey said. "It is good to put us out there, against a tough squad. It points out stuff we can work on, and I know those kind of matches will help us as the season rolls along."
The closest singles match was the last one to finish, as newcomer Jessica Giuggioli battled Audrey Bordeleau to the limit in the No. 5 singles contest. Bordeleau took the first set, 7-5, as she avoided a set tiebreaker by winning the seventh game. Giuggioli came back to win the second set by a convincing, 6-3, score, but Bourdeleau recovered quickly and won the tiebreaker, 10-4, and to take Arkansas' seventh point on the night.
At No. 1 singles, Arkansas' Aurelija Miseviciute, who is ranked No. 1 in the nation, defeated freshman Mallory Weber, 6-0, 6-1. Miseviciute, who lost last weekend at Utah, was the first Razorback off the court Saturday.
Tiger sophomore Kaitlin Dunham battled Ela Kaluder in the No. 2 singles match, but Kaluder defeated Dunham, 6-2, 6-2.
Newcomer Maureen Modesto jumped into the No. 3 spot in her first dual match at Mizzou, and was defeated by Anouk Tigu, 6-0, 6-1. That win by Arkansas clinched the match for the Lady Razorbacks, who start the season 3-0 after wins against No. 28 BYU, Utah and now Mizzou.
In the No. 4 spot, Arkansas' Maryori Franco defeated Chrissy Svetlic, 6-1, 6-1, and at No. 6, Nanar Airapetian defeated Kaitlyn Ritchie, 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles action, Arkansas' Kaluder and Bordeleau upset Mizzou's 44th-ranked duo of Svetlic and Weber, 8-3, at the No. 1 spot. At No. ?2, the 45th-ranked duo of Maryori Franco and Nanar Airapetian defeated Dunham and Giuggioli, 8-2. At No. 3 doubles, Anouk Tigu and Delia Damaschin of Arkansas took down Modesto and Ritchie, 8-4.
The Tigers will host the Saint Louis Billikens at the Green Tennis Center Wednesday at 2 pm in Mizzou's home opener. Admission to the match is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
